I bought a Porter Cable 7424XP years ago but never used it. I was going to ask AJ aka “Junkman” over at DC a few questions but I understand he’s not on there anymore.

Maybe I can get some help here. The pads are a bit confusing and I don’t know what wheel the pads fit over. I have older but great condition paint on 2 cars and 2 more late model cars that are just dirty and dull. All need compounding but the brands and pads are where I need the most help. So many brands, is there one really better than another?

I have to move to FL, everything is cheaper there! Independent detailers here are $350. At the commercial car washes prices start at $169 and everything is extra so expect to pay no less than $295. The GM dealer has a deal. Engine bay cleaning with Gunk spray and dry, shampoo carpets, clean seats and dash with deodorizer, wash - wax exterior, treat black plastic surfaces and compound where needed $435.

I like the Car and Driver instructions noted above. My truck is screwed up. The rolled up bed cover rubbed up against the rear window and the painted panel below. Now I have to polish glass and spray color on the lower rear panel of the cab.

I need a better understanding of the different pads as they’re are not the same as they were 10 years ago (I think Yellow is the new Blue).

These two guys are professional and great at what they do. The guy in the first video has been
detailing for over 20 years. I watched many videos by those two before doing an about 5 step
process on the Navigator.

I believe that each manufacture has their own progression thru the colors, so you would
need to stick with one company.

At 14:17 in the video they talk about pads.

Thanks Rick. This is what I was looking for. In my opinion I believe it doesn’t matter what brand compound or polish, Griots, 3M, Adams, Meguiars and Zaino, they each have their cheerleaders claiming theirs is the best.

I’m a perfectionist when it comes cleaning. I would piss someone off picking over a detailing job I paid someone else to do. Yes I’m slow and it most likely would screw me up doing such a job, but it’s my satisfaction in the end that counts.
