renegade intake? for cross fires

I covered in depth the Big Griffin Radiator install on Digital Corvette Forum Gibbles.
Was my very last project shared there.
Started it on Grumpys site I think in 2013.
Buried in Archives somewhere here.

Just a Few Highlights of install process.

I will put the A/C Condesor back on soon.
Ed has to TIG Weld shut a hole for me.
Focus is my Pontiacs in 2016.
Maybe get back to Big Block power in 2017 for my Corvette.

Power upgrades tax everything Stock on.a C4.
Every Gen of Corvette has issues.
The C4 Vette is best to modify.
Very Flexible platform.
Handling Superb even today bone stock.

Id also point out that the radiator tube design and the number of fins per inch that the increase in surface area has a huge effect on the heat transfer rates, cooling the engine correctly is critical, think things through carefully and if your going to screw it up, try to over cool rather than under cool the engine because a t-stat change will easilly fir that where inadequate cooling will cause engine failure.
think things through and remember ita almost always faster and cheaper in the long run to do things correctly the first time rather than beat yourself silly fixing problems that you cause buy instally cheap parts that need to be replaced

Thinking about C4 Corvette Radiators.
The most unique feature of them is the Placement of the Bottom Hose connection .
A universal fit 1-1/2 Wide Tube Griffin could be used.
Same tube size as my Big Griffin.
Cut off the Bottom tube.
Make a plate & TIG Weld shut old hole.
Cut out New Hose connection required. high up on passengers side tank.
TIG Weld the Tube.
Easy Job for Ed & Me to do.
Save $$$ Gibbles.

The 1984-1989 C4 Radiator is Dinky.

I used the 1990-1996 style.
And Required Fiberglass shroud from 1991 Vette.

Radiator Core size is BIG 1990-1996,

TOO BAD MY BIG GRIFFIN IS DISCONTINUED .

But Ed & Me I think can Fabricate Similar again .

Temp drop is 30-40 F I recall.
Checked with my Raytek Inferred Pyrometer temp gun .
Top hose Vs. Bottom hose.

I do know a good welder that tig welded aluminium for me in the past.

I'll run it by him when he has the time, it might cost me one or two hundred.

I noticed his prices go up the closer it comes to a rock crawler expedition... :)

Results may or not be good 1984-1989 C4 radiator layout.
I am not kidding how Small overall it is next to my 1990-1996 Big Griffin side by side.

Total Liquid Cooling capacity now on my 1987 C4 is 5 gallons or slight more.

Welding is something i have been wanting to learn, this could be a good chance to chat with him for some lessons.

The closest i have done so far was some plastic fusion welding for a drainage company.

Pretty much a 200lb plastic welding gun that looks like a phaser rifle out of star trek.

My welds were smooth like butter, that thing also gave me popeye forarms. ;)

Years later i can still crack peoples knuckles with a handshake...

Its not a Good 1st Project for you to TIG WELD 100% SUCESSFULL & GUARANTEED NO LEAKS.
HONEST .
THE TANKS ARE THIN GUAGE ALUMINIUM .
HAVE YOUR FRIEND TIG WELD.
OR PUT ED & ME TO WORK.
I HAVE THE C4 CORVETTE & BIG GRIFFIN RADIATOR TO COPY PATTERN FROM.
VERY FEW WERE EVER SOLD.
MAYBE 20 OR LESS.
IT WAS $800 BUCKS NEW.
SCARED OFF.
Champion & Dewitts sold in numbers.
Priced less $,

I paid $450 to make it mine.
Then 75.00 more to have it UPS Shipped from Salt Lake City Utah to here in Illinois .

We had a Show down at my last Job.
Mechanic style.
It was a Day Replacing U-joints in Semi Trucks.
All of us showed off.
Picked up the Driveshafts by hand and carried 50 feet across the shop alone.
See who could do it and not Die.
250-300 lbs each.
I carried by.myself Chest High.

And then later in life we all pay for our exploits! :)

So today was fun, car was going great, then there was a major accident on the highway, i got the info just in time to take the alt route...
However everyone else did also...

Got stuck stopped or driving real slow, car started getting real hot, and then it overheated pretty badly.

Was able to limp to a gas station and got it under control, however i might end up rebuilding the engine over this...

Calm down Gibbles.

If you had a Premium Mineral Dino Oil Or Good synthetic oil in the oil pan,
The Crossfire will be OK.

THE ENGINE HEAT ISSUE NEEDS TO BE SOLVED AND INSTALLING A LARGE ELECTRIC FAN WITH A MATCH FAN RATED AT AT LEAST 2400 CFM WOULD BE A GOOD START
obviously youll want to carefully remove the existing fans and shroud and then measure very accurately before ordering and replacement fan and fan shroud combo, ID also point out that installing an auxiliary trans fluid cooler pulls a significant amount of heat load out of the radiator that may be enough to allow the engine coolant to further reduce the engine operational temps , once freed of that extra heat load.
this is a problem, that a multi stage cooling system can be a huge benefit on, a 7-8 quart oil pan no more than 7.5" deep and a transmission and oil cooler will go a long way to reduce the heat load the radiator must deal with, and a properly designed radiator fan with matching shroud goes a long way to increasing cooling efficiency.
