Setting up my Geerage!

I have been doing some thinking and with the increasing need for stable power in the garage, I decided to put in a subpanel and wire three different circuits. One will be a 15 amp circuit for lights and stuff, the other will be a 20 amp circuit to run the a/c, and going to use 50 amp circuit for the welder. I got a subpanel at lowes and have to get the wire next and dig a trench to run it from the main breaker box, and I will drive a stake and give it a good earth ground.

I still have room for 2 more circuits if needed later!

keep in mind that local ordinances and building codes will play a significant role in what you can legally install and how its installed.
Id also keep in mind that youll likely need a feed cable, with each of the three legs, from the main box to the sub panel of about 1 or 0/gauge, (depends on distance) to allow full amps to be fed too that box too be used on all circuits

I am going to run a 90 amp breaker in the main panel, that way I can run the 50 amp welder and the two 110 circuits. I will be using 6/3 outdoor wire and going to bury it. My neighbor is a electrician and said that would be plenty. He said that 6/3 is well underrated, said it will carry 100 amps easy, with my rating at 85 I will be safe. Its 35 foot from main box to where the sub-panel will be located.

Ralph and I looked at it just a little while ago! The 90 amp breaker is out, he said no need, the 60 I have in the main box will be enough, We looked at the documentation for the welder and it only draws 37.5 amps. If there are any problems I can just shut off the 20 amp breaker. Lights and everything else will be on a 15 amp circuit. During the winter I will probably shut that breaker off anyway(20 amp), it is for the a/c and the compressor. I can flip it on when I need it, the welder isn't going to be running all the time, so I can keep that breaker off when not using it. What I will probably do is keep the two 110 circuits on and leave the 220 off until I need it. That way I am only drawing 35- 40 amps at any time.
The cable is 6/3 with ground and its going to be a total of 53 feet 6 inches from main to sub panel.

Well that makes sense then, if you are never going to use them all
at the same time!

Just wanted to keep you are your toes! :D

Okay, I have permanent power in the garage. I have all the wiring done and it works great. here a shot of my new breaker panel.

Oh yeah, a buddy gave me a second window unit, its 8k btu, so I will not sweat to death during the summers. Think 13K btu's will cool it pretty good.

That's almost as snazzy as dual 4 barrel carburetors!!! :D
(Spoke slowly with a southern accent)

okay, the old laptop did a fizzle and poof, burnt up something, it got hot on the base under the mouse pad area, so another unexpected expense. I pulled the trigger and bought a new laptop from Walmart for about 225 bux. But we are working some good hrs at work so I had it. But, I have a good pc in the garage with good graphics and card reader to load pics as I take them here in the shop.

And all my labor sweating hours I put into that thing and it has the nerve
to just give up the ghost!!!

Computers just have NO respect for humans!!! :p :)

newest addition to my garage is my heater, its propane convection heater for 25k btu/hr.

with temp going down I don't want to freeze out here!
