Setting up my Geerage!

solid fixture here in the forum
Hey guys, I have a 4 day weekend coming up next week. So I plan on organizing my new geerage and start the planning on the wiring for power. I plan on setting up 220 for my welder and probably 4-6 110 outlets for all my power tools. My compressor is 110 so I am thinking of setting up my workbench on a surge protector and use it to plug my compressor into and use the on/off switch to power the compressor. I have lots of shelves to build and rearranging to do.

If you only believe 10% of what I say, then please believe this 100% - Do as much creative planning now because electrical work is cheap and easiest planned ahead compared to later adding on. I don't know what your skill level is, if you're surface mounting wire molding, fabricating metal conduit, internally fishing wire behind drywall all of which can change the picture of this project drastically. Always check your local electrical code even if you are not getting a permit. I hate electrical cords in a workshop space. Figure on over-head outlets for drop cord lighting, ceiling fan(s) and perhaps more lighting.
A good shop will have plenty of outlets spread out around the room no less than 12 ft apart (consider using larger gang boxes to accommodate multiple outlets at a single location. Before you begin, check your electrical panel box for available circuit additions, you may have to configure a sub-panel box for the garage and feed everything from there.
Because of abuse and frequency of use always use heavier duty outlets like those rated 120 volts rather than cheap 110 v. outlets. Yes to 12/2 gage wire for std. circuits and 20 amp breakers. Remember the use of GFIs where needed - don't overload circuits, add more ciruits. Consider installing a second 220/230 circuit - maybe someday you may want an oven for baking powder coatings, finding or needing a better (larger) air compressor that is 2 phase/220 v. a lift, a plasma cutter - I don't like to unplug and switch cords around because there's only one outlet. Consider wiring for Cable, Phone and speaker wires together with your new electrical work (I hate extra clutter) having a choice of location for another phone, Perhaps a TV and or a laptop. Perhaps you're not doing much of this at all but even small jobs benefit from careful planning and thinking ahead of the curve.

read thru these threads, AS chromebumpers pointed out, a good bit of planing goes a long way in preventing problems and use of quality higher gauge wire , and quality components and breakers tends to greatly reduce the tendency for electrical problems
I used all 10 gauge wire, and HIGH QUALITY 20 amp dual outlets on my standard wall outlets and mounted them 5 feet off the floor to limit water related issues plus all 120 volt outlets are on gfis and in 3/4" steel electrical tube and outlet boxes with ground wires, and separate circuit breakers on each leg , carefully calculated to match the electrical loads, and have some extra capacity but still provide protection far below the point where the wires might over heat, or outlets burn the shops 36ft x 80ft and theres no place in the shop your more than about 12-16 feet from a 120 volt outlet, and most of the side and back walls your with-in 6-8 feet of a 120 volt outlet. one reason, is that having spent decades doing electrical related work for AT&T as an engineer you quickly become aware of the dangers of shoddy low quality electrical work and the increased fire hazard that low capacity thin gauge wires impose on electrical circuitry
and theres properly placed 220 volt outlets with the proper amp rates for compressors, lifts, welders etc.
keep in mind your shelving heights ,and where youll place light switches and lighting, you certainly don,t want shelf's covering outlets, or switches, or lighting mounted so low shelving interferes with adequate lighting and you probably want shelves that easily have the strength to safely hold heavy parts
I know I bought about 10 of these shelves rated at 1200 lbs per shelf

How many separate circuits are you planning on installing?

Probably 3 two for the 110 outlets and one for the welder. Just depends on how I layout the garage

I think I am going to set everything up first then do the wiring. That will give me the chance to strategically place the outlets and switches.

Where's the girl ???

Every picture of a bike is suppose to have a girl stretched out on the
bike, looking like she is ready for action.

Hey, now wait a minute, you keep telling me I am too old to know what to do with it. What good would a almost naked girl on my bike do if I don't what to do with it anymore. It would probably confuse me!

Now this I could get into!

We are only thinking of your well being Bob!

We're just trying to jog your memory.
