simple question that seems to stun some people

I was sitting there drinking coffee with one of my neighbors, when he brought up the subject of how I was progressing on my corvettes engine/drive train upgrade,
and I stopped, went to my desk, and brought out a rather old and tattered and greasy finger print stained lined paper writing pad with darn near every individual part ,
I expected to need ,listed, along with the machine work, gaskets and fasteners, sealants, etc.
Basically I'd tried to list and think of what I will need , with the price and part number listed and many of them had notes or check marks as to the current condition, location etc.
If Id acquired that particular part and page after page of detailed info on assembly ,details.
(and yes as with most guys the problem is LIFE keeps getting in the way, and my budget won,t allow me to just buy and check off stuff I want at the rate I'd love to progress on the project,\
after flipping through several dozen pages and looking at diagrams and notes inked in,
he turns to me and asked me

"do you keep a detailed wish list of all the parts you want or need, and check them off as you acquire them and list the required machine work and estimated costs on all your personal projects"

I never considered any alternative?
just the idea that he doesn,t bother too, plan in detail, kind of shocked me!
I guess it never ocured to me anyone serious about doing something like that,
would NOT take the time and effort to plan out the project!
list the parts required and think through the pars compatability, the cost, the potential time frame and the little stuff that adds up so fast like fasteners, and accessories required, machine work to get things to fit etc.maybe Im crazy, but I know from experience that you can,t just drop an engine with 3-to-4 times the original power level in a car, youll need upgraded cooling a better more efficient fuel delivery system, better & larger brakes, better tires, a stronger drive train, a change in the transmission & differential, probably different wheels, a higher amp altermator, more efficient cooling fans, and several dozen small upgrades ETC.

but he honestly looked at me like I must be some rather exceptionally odd person, now I'm fully willing to admit I rarely see other people refer to a note book or their lap top computer for a list of components, but thats also probably why I see so many guy screw up builds buy grabbing the occasional mis-matched parts we all find at bargain prices (its those GREAT DEALS" on parts that don,t match your intended goal,) that have screwed up many a otherwise potentially good custom car build.
so I asked him, what his plans were and he basically took several minutes to explain, that if he ran into something that looked like it might work, he would buy and install it!

I think planning is part of the fun, I would never skip something I
enjoy as much as FUN !!!

I constantly find that theres both a great deal of useful info and a fair share of rather inspired B.S. in a few of these threads.
Just like almost every place you deal with in life, you and I have no or little control over what other people post, on web sites, so theres going to be people you either rely on or learn to ignore!
after awhile you learn who can be trusted to provide accurate info and who posts silly stuff just to get a response, theres no need to respond to stuff you know is not correct, or to directly address or rebuke someone you feel is completely wrong, you simply post the correct related info and in a short time frame youll find most people quickly learn who are the B.S. artists vs the gurus with some valid experience to share!

With all due respect to those who can, I cant, never could and probably never will.

Thanks

Ok, I'm lost here. I get the first post, but what does post #2 got to do with the topic? If I'm asking I'm sure at least there's another person here asking the same.

Sorry for the confusion, I should have probably posted more back ground info, I got a few emails asking why I let some people post info that in their opinion was a waste of time to read through...
yes on any website youll find info thats either mis-leading, in-complete or even occasionally wrong, I try hard to correct , remove or explain confusing threads but obviously theres always going to be people who fail to read sub-links, or don,t understand the full scope of whats being discussed and it can cause delays or problems,
thus I simply wanted to point out that a bit of research and taking the effort to think things through, and get infor from several sources, is always the first step in a planed project

Are these posts in the Lounge forum where anything can be posted? A waste of time to read through? There's stuff posted everyday I don't have the smallest interest for - just skip right by, but don't complain about what is common to all Forums.
