A couple of freak mishaps have left my truck's tailgate with a couple of serious dents. I've been on the lookout on Craig's L. for a 2001 to 2007 full size truck tailgate in Silver. Just about every other color has come and gone so I grabbed a red one for $150.
Last night I got out the aircraft paint stripper and proceeded to apply a copious amount of stripper to the tailgate. After a short time it's usually apparent the stripper is working as the paint always wrinkles and is slippery to the touch. This time nothing, in fact it dried very quickly.
I called a friend that manages a paint shop and he told me that today's modern factory finishes come with a baked on clear coat that must be aggressively scuffed to allow any stripper to act on the base coat.
Large flat areas are easy to scuff but I need to find something that will make fast work on the tailgate jambs and the inside. Scotch pads don't scratch very deeply.

theres always the option of getting physically nasty, a few minutes with a cheap tool should remove the harder to access areas of surface finish rather quickly

I have a red wheel that looks the same as the blue one above. I haven't used it yet, I'll give it a try.
