Starter failure

Back to the V8 world - I had a chronic starter failure. I would hear a crunching noise every now and then to boot.

Anyway, I dropped the starter and found what looks like the remains of a plastic washer? I cannot find the source of the debris. Nothig looks missing or other wise broken. There is some scuffing on the magnets of the case and it looks like the stator (?) is glazed over and could use some sanding. Do you guys have any clue what that debris is?

Do I bother trying to recover this starter?

Snooping around, it seems that the fiber washer insulates from the back plate - I might be able to clean up the comutators (not stator  ) find a couple of fiber washers and I'm good to go!

Ummm, nope the fiber washer is still on there. I have no clue what the plastic debris is… maybe something that made its way in the starter and shouldn't have been there?

Is that a stock Chevy starter?

Just realized I have one sitting on the shelf, I could pull it apart to see what we can find out. It will only take couple of minutes to do.

It is… That'd be GREAT!

I really have no clue what that debris is - was it a plastic washer/spacer… I dunno. Is it needed? I doubt it. Hmmm...

I found only the same washer that you did. Nothing else that looks like your broken pieces.

Those scuff marks wouldn't be made by something soft like a fiber washer. You might want to check the bushings that support the shaft to see how loose they are.

Thanks!!!! MUCH appreciated.

At one point, the bolts holding the case came loose and this led to the scuffing that you see.

I have not clue where this washer came from or if it was in the starter… to start with :D

I think I might try to recover this starter. Clean up the commutator… do a few test spins and put it back in there…

- this starter is fairly new. Only a few years old. Three maybe? Four tops!

I could always recycle it in the KG and make it an electric car

Seems to engage and spin properly…

Next weekend I'll throw it back in… I'm quite sure it will start. …quite…

Heh -if it hadn't been turning dark by 1700, I'd be under the car wrenching now. It's getting' cold tho'!

FYI, I still need to push the Chevy though Belgian tech. I have a spare set of four new tires and rims on there, but I am waiting for the next annual tech inspection to come by - that way I am good for a year and can happily slap the procharger back on.

Will also buy some drag radials - this car really needs them as everyday tires. The Cooper cobras are just too hard.

There was a shop here that build a electric quad, with 2 or 4 12v battery.
He just needed a system better that a on/off switch for turning the electric motor on lol. wheely everytime :)

Old mechanic i know, told me story when he was young, putting chansaw motor on bicycle.

Well, I threw it back in there and… FAIL! It tries to turn over but doesn't get far.

I checked the BATT voltage, it was under 12.

Recharging battery and I'll try again tonight.

D

Success! It spins right up! Taking that starter apart saved me quite a few $$$$.

I was a little worried when it first failed to crank - then I charged the batt for a few day and it spun right up…

Hail Mary time - The TT is scheduled to go up for it's annual tech inspection tomorrow…
