Starter / ring gear issues

Hello everyone

We have just found out that our two 400ci blocks are not the same...
The mounting holes on both blocks differ.
Also the distance starter to flywheel is different.
But we are making progress.
Same cars just other students this year.
Last years students where a bit more enthusiastic.

theres two flywheel diam, and two types of starters

most small blocks use the strait bolt pattern, many use the smaller 153 tooth flywheel size, most BIG BLOCKS use the larger 168 tooth flywheels and the diagonal bolt pattern starters but there are engines that used either or both
in most cases Straight across starter designs fit against 153 tooth (and flexplates).

in most cases
Diagonal starters fit 168 tooth flywheels (and flexplates).

Is it a Straight Starter Bolt pattern 400 SBC block ?
Is it staggered bolt pattern ?
Or is it a universal with 3 bolt holes for either or ?

Imports are in and LS Swaps.
Kids think SBC can not do anything.
LS can not do much without Turbo boost.
Take Turbo away and it's 15 second car.
13s that 5.3 LS v8 at best.

Now we have a straight volt pattern block.
The old one ( which was a genuine GM block with traceable number).
The old block had a staggered pattern.

It's a bit confusing Chevy starter straight and staggard bolt pattern blocks.
It's almost like it's a C4 Corvette Tuned Port or K1500 Truck 350 TBI block.
Recall both at home are straight pattern starter blocks.
At work can not check verify till later tonight.

I would only Buy the Premium Top Notch Tilton Engineering Super Duty Starter in your case.
In Belgium - Germany.
I know Tilton fits and works every time.
