Wanting to say hello and thx to everyone for their input on this site
I’m working on a stock 86 454 with 106k. Not using oil. Have a fresh set of 702 heads no modifications all new hardware. A xe256 cam and a temporary old school offenhauser dual port intake with a 750 edelbrock. Haven’t installed the top end yet. Haven’t seen many posts showing the xe 256 in a 454. It’s in a 86 Sierra 2wd with a 14 bolt 8 lug rearend with what I believe 4.11 gears. Any input would be appreciated and again On the site

There should be an improvement in low end torque and some midrange.
It's a TBI 454 engine with peanut port heads.
Limited to how much cam duration before the ECM can not compensate with its stock Eprom programming.
Lots of Big Block Chevy Guys have switched to a Carburator.

well the mild hydraulic cam, closed chamber oval port heads, and old school offenhauser dual port intake with a 750 edelbrock.
you mentioned will provide great off idle torque, but its going to be rather restrictive after about 4500 rpm,
you failed to mention the truck weight transmission, tire diam, and if you have headers on the engine,
personally if I was going to build that engine in a truck with a 4.11:1 rear gear, Id have selected a different cam and intake

the cam selection will depend on the heads, valve spring clearance, valve springs, and the transmission being used, and a few other answers

Intake is temporary til I can locate an rpm and the cam new was $60. Am still looking at cams. It has a 400 turbo. 3/4 ton with 265/75/16 in tires. Not wanting to run a stall and not dead set on my cam. I have a new set of solid lifters and that is what I usually run in my sbc engines
I have a set of headers and wasn’t mentioned because I’m not sure if they will work with my vehicle. Not sure what they came off of they came with a trade. They are 1 3/4 primaries and I believe 3.5 at the collectors full length. Was planning to try when I do the top end. Been considering the 272s magnum comp cam

What are you using this truck for ?
Daily driving ?
Towing ?
Mud truck off Road?

If want to use the stock stall the 256 cam is a decent choice .
Can go bigger like the 272 but likely need a higher stall torque converter.
A 454 BBC was never great on gas mileage.
Gas is supposed to be over $3 per gallon this summer.
Premium will be $4.00 per gallon likely.
Most 454s get 5-8 MPG stock in trucks.

look close its a dual plane manifold design
(good catch, I should have brought that up)

with the divider plate milled away
effectively making it a single plane technically.. yes it works rather well.
(and yes if you want more lower rpm torque and decent machine shop can weld the divided wall partition back in) most people find it works as delivered rather well.

Sorry for the delay. It’s not my daily but am looking to maintain its ability to be a truck and if need be used to pull or haul as needed. That’s my main reason for not wanting to run a stall. Any heavy loads I feel will heat the trans and eventually cause issues even with a cooler. I do have a heavier foot than need be and also with a stock bottom end if I limit the rpms to around 5k it should stay together a little longer. Gas mileage, I know if its still miles per gallon and not gallons per mile I will be good with it. I mainly drive my work van thru the week.
