storing your spare ring and pinion gear sets

it never occurred to me until today that guys would not think to properly store perfectly good ring and pinion fear sets they took out when they changed rear gear ratios until I stopped by a friends house and spotted what I instantly recognized as (and started to cringe at seeing,) that was obviously a DANA 60 ring and pinion gear set that was obviously not worn but rather rusted, and when asked he admitted he had swapped gear ratios and simply thrown the old ring and pinion gear set in the tool box lower drawer, where it had stayed, unloved and ignored for months covered with random tools.
honestly thats no way to treat a component you might want to reinstall in a few months time.
this is a great reason to occasionally check dumpsters at local construction sites for discarded scrap short sections of 4" pvc pipe, you certainly don,t want to pay for full 10 ft sections of pvc pipe you need to cut up when 1-2 ft scrap is frequently found for free
this spray works great once the gears are placed in the 2 gallon zip=loc bags and air tight box but adding moly grease adds a solid extra layer of moisture barrier

now a dana 60 ring gear is listed as a 9.75" diameter its true outer diameter closer to 11.3" so youll want a air tight plastic seal able box about 12" x 12" x 6" deep and a 11.5" long section of 4" capped pvc pipe to slide the pinion gear into with a cap so it won,t bump against the ring gear and some good moly axle grease to coat all the surfaces with before you store the two parts inside separate 2 gallon zip loc plastic bags, then slide the pinion gear in the capped pvc pipe, and the ring gear in a separate 2 gallon sealed zip loc bag after coating its surface with moly grease, the sealed plastic box so the moisture can't degrade the parts, then sit that box up on a high shelf where you won,t set anything heavy on it later and lable it as to ratio and what differential it fits IE DANA 60 9" ford 12 bolt chevy

etc.

you can store two or even three sets of ring and pinion gears in a single box just be sure to coat both components well and keep the matched parts labeled and together in those 2 or 2.5 gallon zip lock bags

Good idea Grumpy.

I have used old ring a pinion shipping boxes from past rear diff builds.
But not very moisture resistant .

The Pontiac 9.3 's 3 rd members I have are coveraged in gear oil .
Then wrapped in a plastic garbage bag.
Kinda heavy each at 95 lbs.

The Prized Posi units I but a 3 sided wood box out of Plywood .
12 x 12 x 8 inches.
Set the entire Hogs head onto the open side of the box.
Gears and posi are protected .
