Switching Fuel Pumps

The in tank fuel pump on my multi port injected chevy has failed. I need it to drive to get it moved immediately. If i go get an in-line pump and hook ot up, will I be able to use the same line and pull thru the tank pump?

the answer depends on the current fuel pump design and unfortunately,
the chances are about 50%-80% that an inline pump won,t work correctly,
with the failed existing fuel pump still in place on a multi port fuel injection system

what year / model car/truck is this defective fuel pump installed in?

Ok. I was afraid of that. Its an aftermarket in-tank retro-fit. I don't know what make. Not looking forward to emptying and dropping the tank on a public street, but gonna have too. Yeahhhhh....

can,t you get a buddy to tow the car to someplace a bit more work friendly,
to do the work?
or at least help you out with the repair"
one of the fringe benefits of being a muscle car club or corvette club member
can be having a local shop that gives tows and work at a discount ,
and you really should have tow insurance as it generally costs considerably less per year,
than a single local tow will.
or perhaps a local towing service is available thats not outrageously expensive
I know my car insurance will pay for short tow jobs in some cases,
AAA or consumer cellular car insurance or something similar in road services
but mostly only car tow jobs, back too my home or too a local repair shop under 10 miles if its free?
if its a C4 corvette, your in luck, its a 30 minute job from the top

MOST auto stores,
harbor freight and auto zone sell a manual pump, similar to this,
to drain the tank for under $15

this motor cycle lift can be used as a transmission jack or to lower a fuel tank or differential, and its a handy shop tool

https://www.rockauto.com/

rock auto generally has a wide selection of fuel pumps at decent prices if you shop carefully and can wait a few days for parts and don,t buy the cheapest crap they offer

Ebay can get you a deal at times
but you should know the correct brand and part number and reasonable prices
before shopping

yeah I know all about ....its a P.I.T.A. not having deep financial pockets

Get this.....(I swear my car hates me)
Parked car running fine.
Went on quick road trip for 3 days.
Came back and car wouldn't start- fuel pump not sending fuel or even trying to.
Just makes a wimpy barely audible sound when i turn the key and no fuel pressure.
I drain the tank, replace the pump, check all the grounds and power wires, put it all back, and.......
Still no fuel pressure! Tomorrow I'm gonna pull off the lines starting at the filter and hopefully I'll find an obstruction, because other than that it would have to be a problem with the ecu, right? Doesn't it have control over the fuel pump?

I really wish we had the StarTrek technology to allow you to instantly transport the car to this location.
Im sure the issues a P.I.T.A. but rather easy to isolate and eventually resolve
(notice I did not say cheaply) As I have no idea what parts are required yet.

when I was initially reading this thread I remember thinking...
I wonder how well hes verified its the fuel pump and not a leaking fuel pressure regulator,
clogged fuel filter or a fuel pump, defective relay
, but considering the work involved in removing the fuel pump if dropping the tank was required...
I thought.... Nah.. he's surely checked the simple/obvious crap by now!
