If your looking for a low recoil level deer hunting caliber ID strongly suggest the rifles in caliber 257 Roberts and 25/06
as a good starting place. they have proven effect in several hunts even for elk, and do a good job on mule deer and white tail deer. Ive had the best results with 100 grain bullets in the Roberts, due to many rifles requiring a fairly short over all length and still wanting to use spizer bullets, and 115-117-120 grain in the 25/06 caliber rifles.
now Im sure I hear screaming in the distance ,
but despite, what you might think IVE seen first hand that a 257 roberts in a decent rifle can and does kill deer and ELK very effectively,
now IM not about to suggest a 30/06-338 win mag might not be a bit faster at dropping game, but as crazy as I may sound ,
year after year I see one old guy in my ELK camp group bring in very dead deer and occasionally even elk with a single well placed shot using his 257 Roberts
someone else,s opinion is about as useful in selecting a rifle that feels good in your hands as they might be in helping you select a first wife!
Ive owned and still own both remington 700 and real mark V weatherbys
,several brownings and other brands,
but all my previous vangards and savage rifles have been passed on to others,
you might feel the vangards, or savage rifles are just fine,
and don,t ignore ruger, theres a few nice options there.
I would also not limit myself to only those options.
Ive had a 25/06 browning 78 re-chambered to 257 wby and thats my favorite antelope rifle,
so don,t limit your options, and I would not limit myself to looking at only a 257 roy,
theres several other 25, 6.5mm and 277 calibers that will work similarly on game in the field
my favorite 257 roberts rifle is the browning BLR
BLR rifle.
but its no longer chambered in 257 Roberts as current production
so a 7mm/08 or a 358 win chambering , might be an option
ruger chambers their #1 in 25/06 , and its proven to be an excellent choice in my experience
