the U.S. army has been wanting to upgrade the 5.56mm to a 6.8mm
and the 7.62 to a .338" caliber squad automatic to significantly increase range and stopping power, they have been testing new weapon designs.
the current 5.56 is most effective at under 400 yards and the army would prefer that was increased by at least several hundred yards ,
so a new heavier projectile and higher pressure cartridge is being tested.
the ARMY also wants a squad automatic with a considerable reduction in weight,
and yet still keep much of the 50 caliber machineguns long range punch,
ballistics of the suggested .338 machine gun allow that.
the ma-deuce 50 cal, is heavy as is significant ammo reserves,
so requires more than one person to transport set up and operate effectively,
so its mostly limited to vehicle-mounted operation.
the new .338 is significantly lighter in weight but still maintains some extreme range punch,
and barrier penetration, for defeating light armor vehicles
