The first question is "can you?" or does it fit (of the same exact size and will the ports line up? Must the heads be changed too?) Other than the obvious, is there any benifit to swapping out an Aluminum 1980 manifold with the steel manifold of the standard L-48 of the seventies? Is the 80 - 82 Aluminum manifold actually the same as all of the L-82 available from '73 - 79?

first ID point out that NO factory intake manifold I've ever seen has ports EXACTLY matching the intake runner ports but they are close every intake requires port matching work, on the plus side, the intake manifolds tend to match the intake gaskets better than the ports in the head castings in most cases
WHERE YOU POTENTIALLY run into issues is with the vortec heads with the reverse flow cooling, if your looking to swap first gen intakes onto second gen LT1 heads, is both routing coolant and the noticeably taller vortec ports not sealing near the top of the intake manifolds runner ports on the first gen intakes using a LT1 style vortec head

Exhaust Manifold Notes

Exhaust manifold casting dates may not be visible when manifold is installed, and some manifolds may not include a casting date. casting date codes are as described for engine blocks, except they do not normally carry a calendar-year reference.

1957-65 Fuel injection right-hand exhaust manifolds do not have a machined hole as used for choked heat tube in carburetor applications. 1963-65 fuel injection left-hand exhaust manifolds do have a machined hole for heat tube.

Richard, as interchangeable as many SBC intakes are there are many differences, especially with the choke.

1970 and older were one style and 1971 -72 another then 1973 and newer often had EGR.

All aluminum factory Qjet intakes had EGR and some were integral and some divorced choke.

Depending on what year L48 you have and if you need a functioning choke are considerations.

Carbs and intakes need to match to some extent if you need a functioning choke.

If stock appearance matters you might not want an EGR intake on say a 1972 and older.

Thanks
Randy

The first question is "can you?" or does it fit (of the same exact size and will the ports line up? Must the heads be changed too?) Other than the obvious, is there any benifit to swapping out an Aluminum 1980 manifold with the steel manifold of the standard L-48 of the seventies? Is the 80 - 82 Aluminum manifold actually the same as all of the L-82 available from '73 - 79?
My vote is NO BENEFIT. Leave it alone. Plus you will ADD WEIGHT with the cast iron manifold.

I'm not sure what Engine he presently has so he might want to add weight or add lightness.

Thanks
Randy

If you are adding a later aluminum intake to an earlier engine, yes you can without issue (though adding an 82 intake would be problematic). You won't gain much, if anything from it other than weight loss.

Initially I was thinking of the difference between the L-48 with cast iron intake Vs the L-82 with Aluminum intake that perhaps aside from some weight savings there might be a slight better flow? I believe Drawmain summed it up correctly.
