The Force Awakens...

I'll try not to
Try and wire up with plug in Male and Female Electrical spade connectors.
That way you can bypass and get back home on HEI alone.

I am all about 100% reliable today.

But Times need a True Race Cam.
Grumpy sneeks into his 496 builds too.

so many times I wish I was in the local areas, when you gentlemen are getting involved with the changes, mods and upgrades,
I don,t care if its tuning a carb, swapping an ignition or swapping a cam, or up-grading a clutch.
simply because if youve done these types of things, the first few times it looks far more difficult ,
complicated or intimidating than it really is,
and after youve been down that road a few times its much faster and easier.
and with wiring especially, when your using number tags and writing detailed notes makes the whole process less confusing.
having a note pad with reference details and numbers helps, and a label maker and color coding wiring helps

Id also label and number and list, all the electrical wire connections in the note pad ,
BOTH ends of each ignition system or ignition system wire,
and any connector, all the grounds, power leads, etc.
any decent label maker can produce sticky number tags,
far cheaper that the kits but even the kits are cheap.

having a decent battery powered label maker comes in handy far more frequently than you may think

at about $30- $45 for a fully loaded dispenser it seems expensive but its really a bargain

they work better than the stock HEI, but REQUIRE the matching coil to work correctly,

So, I pulled the trigger and probably will be experiencing buyer's remorse veeerrrry soon.

I decided to purchase the MSD Street Fighter CD box. The corvette is really to be a daily driver. I want the idle as smooth as I can get it, the plugs clean, quick starts and a cleaned up rev range. At this point, I am not after power. Brian, I understand and appreciate you flagging that MSDs do fail particularly the parts made in China. I'll take the gamble. From what I read, these parts either fail fast or live happily. Placement is important as well. Under the dash or under the hood makes a significant difference in durability as does vibration insulation.

Also on the goody list: a new coil, plugs, plug wires, moroso advance curve kit.

For carburetion, I ordered a fuel pressure regulator, a bracket for it (a small luxury item), and a calibration kit.

I ordered a piston stop. As I am going to have all the plugs out anyway and I am going to invest and upgrade the ignition, it makes sense to be triple sure that TDC + pointer are 100% spot on.

Timing tape.

And finally, after much debate, a new intake manifold. I really want my heater hose functional. I hate the fact that it is hanging and plugged. That seems half-assed.

Stewart thermostat with flange predrilled and, if it fails, it fails open. Expensive but, I think worth it.

Finally, an insulating gasket for the carburetor.

Ouch !!!

Anyway, I am selling off some of my parts here and there to offset the cost (and buyer's remorse). I should be able to offset most of the expense if not all and then some. I have been meaning to flog quite a bit of equipment over the years but never got around to it. It is about time that I do the responsible thing.

Sounds like you have it ALL covered. Happy cruising.

Thanks gents ! Wish you were all here for some tinkering and (Belgian) beers. :D

Parts have shipped by FedEx. Theoretically should be here in time for the weekend.

I actually took that advice some time ago and have a good label printer. I will be doing just that.

Parcel has arrived in customs. Probably stuck in customs. Supposed to be delivered today... but customs being what they are here

Of course, FedEx sent me the wrong papers... another day or two delay.

Delivery scheduled for today. I hope I didn't forget anything; I hate that even more.

yes but is everything you ordered there in good condition and did you forget anything?

Most of the work is done. I’ll post pics next weekend. But I have already taken the corvette out for a short drive.

What a difference. Clearly it needs tuning. Carb for sure and maybe some ignition.

I installed the new intake, an MSD, new wires, new plugs and a fuel pressure regulator.

I also verified TDC with a real piston stop and as carefully and precisely as I could.

And as I say, without tuning, for the very first time, I feel like it’s a corvette I’m driving... even with the crap heads and a generic cam.

The idle is much smoother. Cold start is very fast. Cold ? With the new thermostat, the temp is rock steady. Half throttle and throttle response is pretty good. WOT seems flat.

Pics this weekend, plus more testing and tuning

This had been annoying me for quite a while. A neighbor had a cheap welder. It was enough to weld a nut on there and get it off. The reason it was broken off? The bolt was metric.

As I was going through the fuel line, I spotted this. Glad I replaced all of it. Soon steel braid.

The plug wires were an extremely nice set with crimp jaws, number rings, and an overall great quality feel.

A lick of engine paint because in my experience, aluminum stains and corrodes

Neighbor kid works for BMW. Turns out he was happy to work with me. He said his job was too theoretical and that it was nice to see the concepts he learned in practice.

New Stewart thermostat. $30 but I’m guessing worth it.

Set to 5200 rpm if I recall correctly. (Not set here.) Nicely tucks in fender.
