there are times I'm just not thinking how other people might...think!
Most of us learn by experience or watching others, and of course those not have the experience to realize that you have some options and what to me might be all too obvious, might not be anywhere near obvious to others so when I got a E-mail question last night, it kind of took me from a perspective I'd never considered.
Id posted this bit of info

if you only want to spend a dollar lowes sells four strainers for 98 cents , but buy a case they are cheaper that way
250 for under $30

almost any auto paint store and most hardware stores sell these disposable throw away paint strainer filters , that cost about 20-35 cents each, or a bit less in bulk packs, honestly I don,t see why most guys don,t invest the few dollars or so it takes for a couple high temperature rated magnets and a couple filters to verify the crud thats circulating in your oil, decent filters

if you buy by a case, paint strainers for checking oil trash content come in 100, or 250 pack cartons, and can be had for under 15 cents each

and I got a question,
regarding the paint filters use,
as the questioner asked me how I manage to keep the flimsy paper filter in place while hot oil drains out of the sump , as he had found the rather flimsy paint filters tended to bend or collapse during the process even when held with two hands and he also noted that at times the drained oil over flowed the edges of the paper funnel making its use rather inconsistent as some oil bye-passed the filter element?
THATS PROBABLY a good question I should have gone into more detail to explain

for 30 plus years I used a floor jack and several 12 ton rated jack stands to get the necessary under the car clearance (and still do at times even though I now have a LIFT in the shop)

well I guess I should have made the process a bit more detailed but it never occurred to me someone might hold a filter directly by itself in the oil flow as they drained an oil pan without a structural supporting funnel, to drop the filter into, so the filter was supported during the oil drain process

now a decent funnel like this will work, to support the filter while checking for micro trash suspended in drained oil.

but a funnel with a side handle helps, because oil can be a bit warmer than comfortable too handle at times,so dropping the filter in a funnel that has an outside handle and a spout to direct drained waste oil into the drain pan helps
