This is a 283, I was kinda scratching my head when I saw the supercharger on top of the tunnel ram!
 
looking at this from an engineering/machinist perspective!
its a whole lot easier to machine an adapter plate from 1/2" thick aluminum plate, that bolts to the FLAT upper surface of the tunnel ram intake in place of the upper carb mount section and the FLAT BASE of the supercharger than it is to machine a blower to engine or blower to single or double carb intake

So there's no performance reason, its just for ease of adapting the blower to the engine via a tunnel ram?
 
theres probably a slight advantage in having a more linear, less turbulent flow into the cylinder heads, but I doubt thats all that significant
 
When I see a Roots Supercharger I think of Nitromethane Grumpy .
