Up to and including the 1970 model year, Corvette's base motor (a 350 ci.) was designated as an L46. As a base engine, 1971 and 1972 GM does not have a designation, at least not one I could find. The next time any base engine lists information is for 1973 production listing a new base engine L48 and a performance upgrade L82.
What specifically is the 71 and 72 motors? Are they 2 or 4 bolt mains? Is the 71/72 an L46 with just a compression ratio adjustment (down 0.5)? From my recollection the new L48 was the first year for hardened valve seats and the casting numbers completely changed to reflect a lighter casting.
Any comments?
