Tools........

2Loose

reliable source of info
I'm a mechanic.
I love tools, all kines....

my guns are tools...
started over 60 years ago with a 20 ga shotgun,
now there's a safe and lots of registered tools...

my grandkid, age 7, wants me to take him shooting,
ok, I'll do that, but I need to impress on him the concept
of "this is a tool"....

What a challenge!
Aloha,
Willy

I can't wait for the weather to change I promised my 6YO Granddaughter that I would teach her to shoot this summer I will not force her but she took to fishing pretty good she even ditched the pushbutton reel & wanted to use one like pap pap uses a spincast & she did good I was really impressed. I have an older 22 someone gave me that I'm willing to cut down the stock to fit her if I need to

We went out today, with an old bolt action clip fed 22 rifle, and an old single action 22 revolver, my grandson did pretty well, the rifle stock is too long; like you, I think I need to cut it down to fit him, but he will outgrow that rapidly. Wonder if I can come up with an adjustable stock, hmmmm.....
I only had 22 LR in subsonic, not bad in the rifle, but I forgot how loud they can be in that revolver!

I have a Grandson coming up in a year or so so I 'm not all that worried about cutting down the stock on an old rifle. In the meantime I'm looking into youth model 22 rifles that I may just pick one up for them to learn from then pass the full size down to them when they are ready

if you cut the stock be sure to retain the cut off section, in a labeled zip lock bag, as a good quality wood glue , clamps , dowels ,wood stain and some careful finish work can restore it to nearly original condition, Ivs seen restored stocks that looked almost un-touched when they were restored to original length.
you also have the option on the more popular rifles of putting the original stock in storage and purchasing a spare to cut down, for temp use until the kid grows to near adult size.

Grumpy I've been thinking about this & it would maybe be smarter to buy a cheaper youth rifle for the grandkids to use now then give them the full size one later and that one they can shoot forever. The gun I was going to cut isn't a great gun a customer gave it to me for helping him out of a jam so the cost of the gun isn't an issue but I think the kids would get more use out of a full size rifle longer after they grow into it

I started my sons out with this chipmunk single shot bolt action rifle when about 7-8 years old when they could follow directions

I was looking at that Chipmunk, Marlin also makes a youth rifle but I'm not crazy about Marlin any more I read a lot of bad reviews about them. Also looking at the Savage Rascal it has a good rating its about $50 more but you get what you pay for I read that the Chipmunk is hard to load & has a real tight trigger I have not looked in person yet just looking on the net & reading reviews

my personal chipmunk is neither hard to load nor is the trigger overly difficult to use, but its easily 37 years old , I got mine when they first were produced, and things , like materials and quality control issues may have changed over time.
if you can find a pristine marlin 39a ID suggest you grab it quick its a high quality rifle
the ruger 22/10 is almost a standard, but ID suggest the stainless version is prefered

I prefer my Henry lever action 22ca. Here is a shot of it. It has a inexpensive scope on it, but its sited in at 75 yds, pretty accurate at that distance. It has a 14+1 magazine.

I have a Henry golden boy that has been fired once & put away for granddaughter I sure don't want to cut that one down. I have been putting things away for her then got a grandson so the dividing out starts
