top end kits?

Grumpy...I want to wake up a stock '73 Vette, 454 auto. Looking at the Edelbrock top end kit, Jegs p/n. 350-2095. What do you think about it, and will the stock pistons be compatible with the Edeldrock head? Open to ideas...just want a reliable and fun street motor. Thanks, Gary.

its been my experience that most bbc top end kits work ok, but BRODIX HAS MUCH BETTER BBC KITS IN MY OPINION THAN edelbrock, AND TRICKFLOW AND AIR FLOW RESEARCH ALSO HAVE SOME GOOD COMPONENTS, PERSONALLY, Id make some calls and probably put together the trickflow oval port heads, and comp cams steel roller rockers ,the edelbrock rpm air gap intake and a crower cam, basically building my own kit

So my take is you like the Trick-flows over the Brodix Race Rites?

both heads are really good quality,
Ive used both, BBC trickflow and brodix BBC heads in the past,
with BOTH giving good results,
the choice will depend on which oval port heads, have the best match to your piston domes, their combustion chamber CCs and , that you can get for a good price, and fast delivery, and the factors like flow numbers and lift and load rates on the springs etc. I would not feel either choice was a bad selection, and I know I could produce respectable power with either heads, matched to the correct cam and intake your looking at 75-90 hp more than the stock heads OR MORE with the top end kit/swap, naturally tuning, compression ratio, exhaust restriction etc. and correct assembly are factors,
but with the correct drive train, headers etc. either of these aftermarket aluminum heads and a cam matching the application will really wake up a 454 compared to stock heads, why not call BOTH manufacturers and get a feel for their tech guys and ask questions

Well, I pulled a head off the 454, virgin motor. Flat top pistons. Unless I can find some closed-chamber heads, I can't get the compression up high enough to allow a cam upgrade. Thoughts, Grumpy?

obviously your budget and your desire to have decent compression will force you to make some compromises, and from experience I can suggest the 260cc-290cc oval port heads and a decent dual plane intake as the best match to the lower cpr 454 BBC engine on the street, the closed chamber oval port heads are a good basic component to start with after some larger valves and port/bowl work have been done, but the edelbrock heads are a very good value

80cc heads

replacing PISTONS, or upgrading to a 4.25" stroker crank is an obvious, but fairly expensive and time consuming OPTION, that will boost compression,

Thanks for the links. Looks like the Edelbrock Performer heads will have to do. With their 100cc chamber, I'll be at about 9.3:1...not too bad for a street engine. That should allow for a decent cam upgrade. Might be tough to reach the 500 hp level I was hoping for, but will certainly be better than the 275 hp factory rating. I think a cam in the 220*/230* range would get the job done. Thanks again. Gary
