Cam bearings are correct and properly installed with bearing In rear having 3 holes and a groove.
Holes in bearing are aligned with holes in block.
Pushrods verified clear
Lifters are new .
Lifter bores have been checked for size ok.
50 oil pressure at idle
Pan and pump are new. Milidon.
Hydraulic lifters are properly preloaded

Problem/symptom
Insufficient ammount of oil getting to top of motor and clattering similar to what a solid lift would sound like.

welcome to the web site!!:like:
why not post a few car pictures??
no ones perfect and parts fail so lets eliminate a few potential areas of concern,
most of us learn by making mistakes, I know I make my fair share, over 6 decades,
its called paying your dues or gaining experience.
this should be interesting so let us know what you find

as always you start by testing and eliminating the potential causes
where are you reading that 50psi oil pressure from? Port location you use on the block?
what oil Filter are you using?
have you tried a 5w20 weight oil?
did you install a high volume oil pump?
what oil filter" Id suggest the longest WIX that fits the application
and yeah I know you thought you checked, but the oil pickup to oil pan floor clearance is CRITICAL, if its under 1/4" you get that issue
Id certainly drain the oil and use a cell phone probe cable to inspect the pick-up to oil pan floor clearance, I had a friend with similar issues on a 1965 chevelle and after testing it turned out that the new high capacity oil pan he had installed with the new high volume oil pump got installed and some where in the process the oil pan had cracked the oil pump pick-up during the install as it was barely installed in the pump.
I ran into a case years ago where the owner of a car had low oil pressure we pulled the pan and found he had used a ton of silicone on the oil pan gasket during the install and a great deal of it squeezed out, clogging 90% of the oil pump pick-up screen

btw for the few new guys

Thanks man. I'll be over to the garage in a bit and I'll check this stuff out and report back.
Meanwhile (if you get this meanwhile lol)
What is your opinion on this theory.
I had a guy tell me this.
"
"What distributor is in it?
If it's a m MSD, you have to make sure it's aligned properly with the oil galley on that side, if it's too far down it'll leak a shit ton down into the cam tunnel.
MSD was stupid when they made the oil band on the pro billets so wide, look at a stock GM one, the oil band towards the cam it smaller... They knew what they were doing."

By the way , you came highly recommended from a couple guys on team chevelle. Sounds like you're a legend in your own time!

that's a distinct potential issue
look over the links and pictures, there are oil pump priming tools, and aftermarket distributors that have the lower oil pump ,that forms part of the blocks oil passages that don't match or seal with the chevy OEM block internal oil passage dimensions

oil system mods that help

heres a short list REMEMBER the object or goal in building and maintaining the lubrication system is too maintain a 100% dependable pressurized cooling flow of lubricant to the bearings, rockers, valves etc. obviously use of a high quality synthetic oil that has a higher heat tolerance and that...

Oil pump priming

I have attempted to prime and pre oil the system in my 355 build using the tool shown on Grumpy's stickys but am not sure if all is as it should be. The filter was filled pre installation and the balance of the 5 quarts of oil poured into the lifter valley. The tool in inserted and run with a...

Alright then I'll check your list off and Also I'll measure the msd distributor I'm using and measure some old gm distributors I've got hangin around.
Hey the problem is only a thing. A physical thing so there's got to be an answer. Just gotta play detective and find it

I've got 5 old GM distributors here, none of which I'm 100 percent sure what they came out of . The dimensions are all over the place on these things ..I'm thinkin I'd better get an oem style distributor for this engine and get a pertronix unit to switch it to HEI .
what are your thoughts?
Heads were milled .030 if that matters.

Also I dropped the pan . Screen is 1/4 to 3/8 above the bottom of the pan .
There was a fair amount of sludge in the bottom of the pan though.
The pump is a milidon M77HV

Id clean the pump internally, and re-instal it after inspection, and clean the pan, and oil passages in the block with a back flush of diesel fuel under high air pressure, of sludge and weld a spacer nut under the oil pan pick-up so pump suction can't reduce oil flow clearance with the pan floor

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts you knew this at one time but forgot it. VERY interesting.
Here goes !!
