Tranny shift kits

For thoes that have them:

Whats your opinion?

I have a 84 vette with the 700r4 tranny and would like to be able to bark the tires in 2nd gear but only when I am getting on it. My vette shifts firm now and I like it just fine. With the realtive low cost of a shift kit it's very tempting but I do not want a sudden slam when driving normal nor do I want to have to anticipate the shift and let off the gas to avoid a very hard shift. Any suggestions?

shift kits come in several variations, the harshness of the shift is controlled by the routing of the pressurized fluid, its pressure and the parts installed, like a fluid re-routing valve plate with ball bearing check valves, the converter stall speed and design effects your results as does the transmission and rear gear ratio,
the simple kits use a block-off and reroute plate that firms up the shifts but because the transmission pump pressure is significantly reduced at just off idle speed vs at peak rpm, they tend to shift smoothly at low rpms and harshly at peak rpms.
if you go to the next level, the trans kits have heavy duty servos, and a different fluid routing etc, on the full race kits its even more pronounced.
your best course of action is to discuss the kit you select with the manufacturer as to its application
Ive used lots of TRANSGO kits with decent results

after installing a shift kit in my neighbors older caddy, the transmission fluid temperature dropped noticeably lower , he said it took some effort to re-train his foot, because if he stomped on the accellerator it chirped the tires during hard shifts, something it never did with the stock transmission
