Tum-Tee-Tum...

Oooo, haven't even used it yet but soooo happy with my new timing light with a METAL pickup. You can imagine what happened to my last three timing lights...

Aaaah!!!!!

the die grinders basically a use for a few weeks, and pitch in the dumpster tool

Did not know this. That would explain why mine keep on "catching." I was going to check if my air pressure was low.

there are some good die grinders on the market, but these less expensive import versions, are a BARGAIN even if they only last for a few weeks or months, under constant use they do wear out in a few weeks or months (especially if you fail to used dry air and don,t bother to lube the tool.) because wet air and moisture tends to cause internal rust/corrosion over time. OBVIOUSLY dependent on the amount of use and abuse, I use mine almost constantly for cleaning and porting, de-burring etc.
but at under $20, I tend to look at them like sand paper,or spark plugs, its hardly worth bothering if it lasts a few weeks or months before the bushings start to wear noticeably

btw

OK Dorian it's not going to work on me this time ! I know when someone is pulling my chain ! You are NOT going to get me to make a comment about the Sta???? in the picture. :D

That timing light looks like something you must have stolen off an Alien.....who make that one ???

Timing light by Actron. I selected it because, from price low-to high on summit, it was the first one ot have a steel-cased induction pickup. It was $100 and it does look well manufactured.

In addition to dial back and tach it seems it has another weird feature: flashlight!

Whatev!

EDIT: the cheapest one I could find with metal pick up AND tach.

Curious to see if I will have the patience to dress the block... Good tip on grinder AND face shield. Never thought of that one... has got to be better than glasses.

I have bought these items for grinding, polishing etc. I ordered several RECONDITIONED items from Tool King and they look like new when they arrive. Not everything is available Reconditioned, but if you keep your eye open and watch for those things you can possibly get them considerably cheaper.

Dorian,

So how is the engine build coming along, we need an update with pics.....pretty please !!!

This Saturday likely I will drop by the machine shop and give them my pistons + cam bearings and head bolts. I might ask them to file to fit my rings.

Eeeek, Made in Taiwan: worried!

Right... called machine shop. For about $50 they can file to fit my rings. I read in a book somewhere that unless you have the tool, it's best to just leave it up to the shop which I think I will.

Tomorrow I will drop off the pistons, rings, and cam bearings, splayed caps 'n bolts, + head bolts.

Will tell the guy to:
- deck (not to zero - just clean-up)
- replace cam bearings
- overbore
- add splayed caps + align bore.

Two weeks later, I should have everything back.

Frustrating in a way, because like Indy, I'd like to get busy on cleaning up the block.

On other hand, that does give me more time to work on the engine bay...

Frustrating...

I miss my block :|

:D   If you do a side by side scientific test....youll find hugging your WIFE on cold nights beats hugging a chevy block most nights, its only a block and far less expensive to replace than a wife

What are you telling the machine shop you want for a bore surface after honing ???

To me this is a hard one to get right. With different grit stones and Diamond versus Vitrified in the same grit leaving a different surface profile. Then there is plateau honing and how many strokes of the hone......etc This maybe one of those situations where you don't have much choice, but to trust the machine shop.

BTW, thanks for the nice pics !

I am going to carefully read the ring mfg instructions, piston clearance, etc. Somehow I think that beggars can't be choosers. This guy will probably hone with what he has - I'd be surprised if he has a torque place but I'll ask.

Grmbl. it's been three weeks. I called the machine shop to see if he had finished. "There's a problem... your bolts are too short. Can you get longer bolts for the cap?"

You gotta be kidding. No work was done! Nothing. Why didn't he call me???? Gmbl.

most machine shops Ive dealt with don,t make promised dates on completions unless they are written into contracts,
youll be amazed at how much smoother things tend to go when you make it really obvious that your taking LOTS OF clear detailed photos of your parts, the guy you talked too, the paper work, and when you insist on signed detailed work sheets with firm dates, prices and detailed listed work to be performed, if the guy says (two weeks) make a point to ask if hes SURE he can meet that date because youve got other commitments that DEPEND on him keeping his word, ask if he might need 3 weeks, or can commit to 10 days, get him to commit on signed & dated documents, you don,t have to be a P.I.T.A. but make it obvious that you want to have a firm schedule you can depend on, and that your tracking major component / parts, and have them stamped with ID numbers

It's like being a kid on Christmas eve, I would be pacing in circles waiting for my stuff.

I'm trying to build a friendly relationship with my machine shop. I noticed he had a very out-dated
computer, so I offered one of my old ones (still better than what he had) and setup a backup system
which will store his data off site. Even if the place burns down he will still have his customer lists and data.

What happened to make the bolts too short ??? You were going with splayed caps....right ???

What does the contract say happens when they don't meet the contract completion date ???

realistically, your not going to get any machine shop to sign a contract stating any financial penalty obviously ,
but if you include
"completed parts must be returned to owner
within 60 days from today,
DATED____________________"
signed____________________

you will have some recourse in court if the parts are not returned, and few machine shops object to signing that

one reason I do a great deal of my own work, is that Ive had more than a few bad machine shop experiences over the last 45 years or so and while Ive also had some very good relationships with some shops IM only TOO AWARE of the significant number of CROOKS, SCAMMERS,AND INCOMPETENT MORONS in the field

The splayed cap only came with the short bolts  I should have figured the stock bolts might be too short. Anyway - be good to get some ARP in there...
