Unforgiven Project

Hello Thunderbolt.

I also am scared to paint the inside...
Not sure what the paint really does, but as far as oil goes... The oil rides over a film of oil that sticks to the block.
I like to just smooth the surface, and remove the high spots.
That maybe is what the paint does with out having to grind and sand (which is alot of work).
I will be placing some screen and a couple magnets in there though.
Just been researching on where to buy those magnets.
It's been coming off for some Big Block Chevy guys on FB.
No idea...real Glyptal does not come off.
Like to do it to the TA block.
That Midwest Winter condensation issues.
Cold. Warms up. Sucks water into the engine inside like a magnet.
Rust.
Unless you go out and start the engine often. 2 times a week at least even if -10 - 20 F outside and in garage.
Burn the water moisture off and oil circulates.
Means keeping Race gas 110 for me year round at least 40 gallons.

Ok , that makes sense Brian.

I found why I could not search for anything on this site..... The box was checked " search this thread only"
I unchecked that box and found a WEALTH of information!:)

Just ordered some of the magnets Grumpy linked a site to.
Now... I need a good epoxy!

I like the Original JB Weld.
Dries hard as a rock.
The 5 minute stuff never fully cures remains soft.
Never used magnets like Grumpy .
A good idea I think.

glyptal is used to seal in, micro surfaces and prevent fine metallic dust that might be present ,
even after a blocks been cleaned from getting into the oil flow circulating back to the oil pump

I read that Mike, If I may call you that.?

The peeling off is what I am afraid of.
Grumpy made a great explanation of why it is done.
Murphy likes to follow me around it seems, so I do not want to give him any known ammo to use against me.

Need to experiment with Glyptal sold now....Have the spray paint version on hand, sold by a place out of Texas, Red Giant.
Real GE Glyptal I don't think is sold no more. General Electric defunct gone.
It was made from some Bug beatles, crushed ground up, the guts goo made real glyptal.
It was used in all WW2 Aviation & Electronics to seal out water moisture.

LOL...... It might work then.... Because they sure are hard to get off a windshield sometimes! :)
Some African Beatle or something.
Read online in past.

Ricks CS144 alternator I used the Red Giant brand Glyptal on the field windings and Rotor. Baked with my heatgun.
On his T-bucket.
Did the same for Dorian on his CS144, he is no longer here on Grumps, In Belgium.

Have a 1957 Olds 9.3 rear diff I painted complete also with Glyptal Red Giant.
In my basement. Just air dried, hard as a rock.
Need to do long term oil immersion test & heat the oil to 300-400f See what happens to Glyptal sold today.

When i worked with aviation electronics we used GE Glyptal for electrical insulation on some stuff, i still have an old can of it, but no idea what to use it for, and it may have gone solid in the can by now after several years :D

paint the cast surfaces

yes the stuffs expensive and high quality,
try to have a buddy go in for 50% of the cost,
a quarts easily enough for 5 -7 engines,
if you look at it, as a durability enhancement, thats less than $10 an engine

Ive used it and seen several other people use it , it works fine.
glyptal is used to seal in, micro surfaces and prevent fine metallic dust,
that might be present ,
even after a blocks been cleaned,
from getting into the oil flow circulating back to the oil pump,
if the blocks clean, grease free and dry when its applied ,
and if its left to dry over night it will not come off.

I have already cleaned my block and have the valley soaked with MMO . :)
Would prolly be a bear to clean it oil free at this point.
I know that I have to spot clean some areas for the magnets to be epoxied with some brake cleaner and alcohol.
Thats going to be hard enough..

Use Acetone & follow up with Denatured Alcohol.

Test fit the new cam.
Real important it must turn free.
Had a Cam bearing fail in a Pontiac 455 in past.
My engine machinist back then said it would be A-Ok, It was not.
Long story there. 1st check I make now on all engines !

Don't forget about Por15, it's held up in my engine for 6 years now.
