Unforgiven Project

Today I finally got to work on my motor for a bit.
Got my tools ready for the job,

did not have time to make the squaring tool so I used a piston instead.

I have one second ring that is out of square by about .001 it measures .026 on the inside and .027 at the wall
With the intended power levels expected, I am not going to sweat this ..

As of tonight I have only one cylinder to go as far as fitting the rings. each set of rings are in a marked plastic bag waiting to be installed on it's piston.

Oh yea... I got a couple packages dropped off today... my oil pan arrived!!

And a few studs came in also...

I ordered a 1 piece pan gasket but it won't ship for another 2 weeks...Also, that damn EPC-108 hidden oil plug has been a pain in my ...... I have called all over and no one has one. So I found it at Summit Racing.
It is being shipped from Neb. and should arrive here on Friday.
In the mean time... I bolted the rear oil main cap on and used my bore gauge to check the diameter.. I will be making an alignment tool that is used to locate that rear seal adapter in line with the crank... They wanted $60
for the tool... I have some Delron rod at work that I can use to spin one up on the lathe. I'll post pics when it's done.
Well, that's about it for an update so far.

I looked that pan over and all I could find was a couple scratches on the paint.
I am excited to have gotten half off the original price. I have to believe it was a pan
someone purchased and it did not fit there application, so they returned it.
I will purchase those items all day long to get a discount!

LOL.. Yes I need to be off the ground...
I am just fitting rings for now and packaging them for later install.
I am going to rewash the block and get my barn cleaner before I go any futher.

Just have too many irons in the fire to start assembly.
Have to finish my nephews truck this week end.. converting it over to full hydraulic steering. Valving is suppose to arrive this week.
Then I can claim my barn back and really do a good clean job in there .

Then there is HER!!! ( anyone married long enough knows what this means)

I'm still upset that that door cost me Damn near as much as this engine build !!!
That was a tough pill to swallow for sure!

I love the pictures and the oil pan looks damn nice!
why is it that you are not using an engine stand for engine assembly?
it surely makes the job and access to the assembly process easier

The engine is on a stand Grumpy. We we're just implying that the parts I just received were laying on a piece of card board that I layed down on the floor
instead of being set on top of a bench, that's all.

I just wanted to get a picture of them to post for you guys.

What I have been doing is wiping down the machined surfaces with Marvel mystry oil every night, and covering the engine with towels.

I do have a question for you men.... when I go to bolt that rear main seal adapter plate to the back of the block, should I make a gasket for it,
or do I just use some RTV

I am not sure.
The factory 1-piece rear main seal adapter used a thin paper gasket.
Comes with the Fel -pro rear main seal I recall.

I can buy gasket making material in 12" x 12" sheets at our local automotive store... I Was thinking this might be the way to go for that
particular item.

I think I will also use your idea Brian and swipe an old Bed sheet from the wife's closet.
Have to be stealthy about it though! :D

That table looks nice Grumpy... I think that I have a folding 6' table in the barn attic that I use for our camp site. I wonder if it would be strong enough to hold a couple hundred pounds of parts. Thank you for the idea!

I'm changing your name to JACK the HEN PECKED!! Mama ain't happy---no one will be and doors are a PITA to buy and install.

anyone married , for very long learns the basics...
if you want less B.S. and more nuckie/ TLC time ,
the female half gets her too-do-list worked on regularly

50 years now
I keep telling her I expect to get my sainthood papers any day... never strangled her even once..

ABSOLUTELY !!!
35 years and counting!

Which reminds me of a joke....

A man was sitting at his kitchen table reading a piece of paper like they where instructions to something very important.
He was flipping the paper over and upside down and even used a magnifying glass to study this piece of paper.
His wife of 50 years happened to walk by and notice that he was studying this piece of paper intently,
then she asked him, " what is that piece of paper you are studying so intently on?"
He replied.. "It's our marriage certificate"
She then asked him..." What are you looking for?"
Not looking away from the certificate, the man replied..." The Expiration DATE!"
