Unforgiven Project

Last year I missed the season and it was awful!
I had gallbladder surgery two weeks before the second event and could not drive my truck. So I asked my co-pilot Tyler to run my truck for that event. He did a really good job. We did not win
But it was exciting to actually see my truck in action and watch how the suspension reacted to the terrain.

The pic below is one of my favorites. Tyler was showing off in front of a 1000 hp truck that was sitting just outside of the picture. LOL

The guy and his crew were really impressed with my truck and took a big interest in it.
Keep in mind... my tire and rim combo weigh 225lbs
Per corner. It also has an 8’ bed.
Yes... this is from a dead dig!!

It has Torque being put down with 6.17 diff gears front & back.
Nice photo. Impressive.. Drag Mud Truck.

So You bought a Forged Rotating assembly package with CP Carillo Pistons 2618 alloy - 383 stroker SBC.
Correct ?
Is this what your going to use in your friend's Borrowed 010 Block ?

I guess this borrowed block has the same bore? Any idea what the clearances will be for
the piston to cylinder wall?

Seems you will need to know this clearance before going to far, if you are not boring the
block and fitting the pistons.

No.. I have not bought nothing yet, but the rotating assembly I was looking at has Howards forged pistons, and we are upgrading the kit with Eagle H-beam rods.
We have decided to just re-use the components I have for the borrowed block, with the exception of a new crank.
That way I will not have alot of money into the borrowed block. And if it blows, it blows.
All the new parts are going into the Dart block.

The company who is coating my blower says that he will coat the pistons to match the bore. They coat line to line. But yes, it has a 4.030 bore and has been prepped for a stroker crank.

This basically is just going to be a no frills replacement motor just to keep me in the game while I continue to build the "Project motor" without having to invest alot of cash into it.
Hell, I may even just throw a set of older double hump heads and a Rpm intake on it , so if it does blow, I won,t hurt any valuable parts. ( aluminum heads, and blower)
Not looking to win any races with it, It's just a motor to keep me out there, and not cheat the new build with cheap parts.

Brian, this is the part number of the kit from competion products....Item Number: RATP385F

Liking the Chevy Bowtie 350 4-bolt main block.

Summit Racing reamaned block is Vortech era 880 block, 1996-1999. 4-bolt mains. Have to use 1-piece rear main seal crank.

Both decent.

The Howard rotating assembly has to be made by others.
Howard cams popular now.

King bearings I don't know.
Mike likes them.
I like Clevite P bearings.
Grumpy likes H series Clevites.

Light throttle cruising does not count as racing.
Foot on the Floor gas and do not lift for anything.

LOL!

I actually placed a magnet under my gas pedal a couple years ago for a conversation piece (it was just for show)
One of the guys asked me why I did it.
I told him it was there in case I got bounced out of my seat. That way I would not have to worry about staying on the gas and I could just concentrate on steering!

This was all staged as a joke of coarse.;)

Back in post #44 I asked about that block and if it would hold up to the expected power levels. For $855 I was in doubt.

I did find a Little M block for $2100 though. I have been keeping an eye on it. I think you posted the add!

Ok I see... those $850 blocks are reman's not GM BOW TIE blocks. There is a $1500 price difference between the two.

The Dart Little M is expensive.
It costs more that an Indian Adventures IA2 Pontiac V8 block that is rated at 4000 Hp that costs $3,000.
Same block Big Chief uses on his Crow GTO on Street Outlaws.

one of the many reasons Ive always preferred building the BBC engine vs the SBC, the stock,
427/454 O.E.M. production
BBC block can easily handle 600 plus hp
and almost all the better production BBC heads designs out flow almost all production SBC heads

Have You decided what to do ?

TRW - Speed Pro Pistons will still work.
010 Block like before.
Try & use a forged crank or 9000 series Scat.

No way I would put a new stoker kit in a borrowed block.

I have thought about what to do darn near every minute of the day.

I have to ALWAYS keep in mind that whatever I do, I have to keep it separate from my "NEW BUILD MOTOR"
I have to keep focused on that. I also remind myself that what ever money I put into a "TO GET ME BUY BLOCK" , is money
I am taking away from the original goal .

I have been thinking about all options and had this thought: The 383 motor I have, has been running well for a few years. The reason I pulled it was because of low oil pressure. Other than that, it was a strong motor with good compression (post 107 was last spring). Now during the teardown, I have seen worn out bearings, and cylinder walls that could use a hone, which was expected. What the concern was, is when I seen those pins. It threw me off guard. Grumpy gave a great explaination as to why it happens. This automatically triggered a NEW BLOCK for my performance build.
What got lost was the fact that this motor ran well ( besides low oil pressure) before the teardown. It did not leak fluids or burn oil.

Thinking about all that, I am kicking around the idea of having the crank reground and install new bearings and call it a day with this motor.
If it blows it blows. All I will be out (money wise ) is the regrind cost, bearings and gaskets.

This way I do not have to worry about anything I (may) have to do with the borrowed block, and I can continue forward with the original plan
of putting all the money toward building the new DART BLOCK MOTOR.

What do you guys think of that idea?
Is it good thinking.... or is it a bad idea created from the anxiety of wanting to be back out there this year.

BE HONEST!!!

That's the first reality check thing you've said you would do yet. JMTCW IF you were rich and had lots of money to throw at this project, it would have already been done. So use what you got and run what you brung and keep the big goal in mind with the new block and internals. So what if you don't win EVERY race? NO one does. It's about the experience..

Thank you T-Test.
It is very easy to get caught up in all the excitement and lose track of the original goal!
Sometimes it's better to just walk away for a bit without doing anything at all, (except for keep saving your money).
