Had a Job Interview today at a local Diesel shop.
Went well.
They are kinda strange managers interviewing you lately...."How much pay do you need ????
If you say you want X amount per hour & they don't like it....Your out...
If you say Pay me $10 per hour your hired....but you can not live off of that with a family & 2 young boys to raise.
They already know what I am worth to them.
If I can book out the labor hours, $100-150 per hour shop rate time & I can, everyone prospers.
$20 an hour at least.

Working on another job in Joliet too.'

The Suburban is running like brand new.
Even gets decent MPG.
Seems like 17-18 per gallon. Pretty good for a 5500 lb huge brick 4X4,
 
The answer you are supposed to give them is that you have a family & 2 young boys to raise.
You can embellish here: kids are going to need braces, etc. You also need medical insurance.
Ask if they have a retirement plan. This shows you are thinking long term, even if you are not.

If they raise the min wage to $15/hr, you are worth more than $5 above that. You have to negotiate.
Say something like, "Why don't you try me out for 3 months at $25/hr? That should give
you enough time to see what I can do, and both of us to see if we are a good fit for each other.
Then we can renegotiate at that time."
If they hire you, keep your mouth shut about your personal life. Most important - show what you can
do without saying how stupid they all are! Behave like an inspirational teacher.

I get 11 from day 1 with a 305.:(
 
Automechanics don't have it too good right now.
No solution immediately .
Diesel side is much better.
As long as my body can hold up.
Still in Good shape at 46.
I took lots of photos at my last job doing complete engine overhauls on Cummins ISX, M11., Detroit Diesel, & Caterpillar .

I brought up my young boys.
Wore my Wedding band too.
 
I installed a Bosch Turbine Fuel pump.
Made just for GM TBI 305-350 engines.
I had issues with the old fuel pump.
Erratic pressure & volume output.
Amazon sold it to me for $42.99.

I replaced mine once already. But now the tank developed a leak along the seam. I have the new tank.
I've been filling it only half full for over a year now. Very soon, I will be removing the bed to sandblast
what is left of the frame and coat it with POR15. I will replace the tank at that time.
Thanks for the fuel pump suggestion. I will check it out then. Got a part number?
 
BTW, I read that if your fuel gauge jumps around like windshield wipers, a baffle in the tank
surrounding the fuel pump/pickup has come loose. Mine does this.

My Mistake Mike.
The Bosch TBI Turbine Fuel pump was less $.
 
BOSCH Has a Nice website.
Easy to use parts lookup search engine.
Its a non roller design fuel pump.
Made more like a jet engine. Must have a snail scroll inside.
Very quiet.
I bench tested prior to installation.
It took off wild. Like a Dremel spinning at 30,000 rpms.
 
The Aeromotive Stealth 340 liter fuel pumps are made the same way, Turbine design.
Too much pressure. Can deliver up to 100 psi steady.

Even during the times when I'm working for some other organization I still remain an employer for other ventures.
As an employer I feel qualified to correctly answer the interviewer's "pay desired" question.
But first, there's a list of "can" and "cannot ask" questions put out by the EEO, or the Equal Employment Oppertunity Laws That addresses this "pay desired" question. However, given the inequalities of the real world, the EEO's laws are commonly ignored behind closed doors at "mom & pop's business.
If an employer asks you what you need its for a couple of reasons, it can tell a lot. Someone that knows their job, knows the market. Sell yourself too short and you could be upgrading from your last job. Something is fishy if you are saying you're a first class Mechanic and you don't know what a first class mechanic makes. If you're worth $50/hr. you shouldn't be asking for $20. Never say you can do "cash."
Secondly, if you are too high but not rediculasly too high there may not be room for decent incremental raises down the road because the employer does't want somebody starting at the top of wage band. People at work talk and they will eventually find out what somebody gets paid. The last thing any employer wants is to lose good employees because somebody makes more (justified or not). Sometimes cutting to the chase early in an interview process can save an employer time by stopping someone that wants too much for the job offered.

In 1971 a Mechanic was getting 50 % of shop labor rate.
So today with shop rates of $100 - 200 per hour,
that would mean I should earn $50 to 100 per hour. EQUATES TO EARNING $100,000- $250,000 PER YEAR.
Not going to happen in this bad stagnant economy.

THE ONLY WAY TO PREVAIL LONGTERM ON MY OWN IS TO RUN MY OWN SHOW.
OR RUN MY OWN SHOW WITH ANOTHER MECHANIC.
