Hello everyone, yes its been along time but my never ending 383 corvette fight is still going strong , I had one of my rocker studs break and this was about 4 months ago and the Mechanic has had a hard time adjusting the valves, well long story short, I picked up the car yesterday and I had to turn the Distributor because when ever I gave it a little more gas going down the road I heard the valves start to click, I drove the car home very slow and moved the Distributor clockwise and the car runs as it should. My problem is now when I crank the car up and pull the shifter out of park to reverse or into drive the car cuts off, no matter what I do it keeps on cutting off, the intake was smoked to insure no air leaks and Im dont know what else to do, and also I notice when I picked the car up I had to hold my foot on the gas pedal and break to keep it going once in gear. I was just ready to get the car away from there, any ideas?

Your problem sounds like a valve train wear or valve train clearance issue, as with most problems its best to start with the basics and do some testing, isolate the problem, to the engine, or drive train, or a component like ignition, or fuel system, etc.isolating it to mechanical valve train issues, ignition strength or timing,or fuel supply or delivery related, helps a great deal, then go from that point.
its very common to find valve train clearance issues, well before you start any engine, issues like
getting close to spring bind, piston to valve clearance, failing to degree in the cam.
Or having retainer to valve seal clearance issues
or rocker stud to rocker slot binding.
or rocker body to rocker adjustment nut clearance issues,
or rocker body to retainer issues, incorrect rocker geometry from the wrong spring install height or push rod length, that can cause valve keepers to rapidly wear. anyone of which can easily result in a valve train failing or cause it to self destruct.
a rocker stud won,t generally break unless theres significant clearance issues causing excessive forces on it.
ID suggest you step by step, go thru and set the ignition timing, verify TDC on the timing tab and damper, set the TPS and IAC and SET the valve adjustment after VERIFYING ALL THE VALVE TRAIN CLEARANCE ISSUES, BUT ID ALSO PULL TROUBLE CODES, and check all the electrical connections and verify fuel pressure while testing

related info, yes I know there,s a ton of reading in links and sub links but its also a great deal of useful info
