i want to know if i can use a coolant temp guage for my oil?
its seems like my oil still gets hot when driving for a while on the highway but my coolant stays normal. i have to slow down or let go of the gas so my oil does not get to high. i just want to make sure if the digital dash is reading correct.

Re: water tamp gauge use as oil temp gauge?

first question , is what are the temp ranges were talking about, coolant in the 170f-220f range is fairly comon, 230f for brief periods is nothing to get crazy over, oil temps generally run 15-20 degrees hotter than coolant and really NEED to exceed at least 215F on ocasion just to burn off moisture, in the oil.

if its an electrical gauge using a remote temp sensor I don,t think youll have a problem swapping temporarily in many cases, unless the tread size is different, most water temp sensors are larger than oil temp sensors, so youll need an adapter of some kind, but the temp sensor construction may and probably will be different, and the resistance or voltage used to measure may be very different, the connectors usually are, sensors are usually faily cheap,(especially at salvage yards) why not get your sensors for testing your current gauges with a quick trip to the auto parts store or salvage yard, or buy a second set of gauges and sensors.
Electric gauges that require senders must be "matched" with the correct sender. If a sender that does not have the same electrical match is used the gauge will not provide the proper readings
theres also the IR temp gun which will answer many questions very quickly.

keep in mind theres DOZENS OF DIFFERENT CHEVY TEMP SENSORS, for OIL AND COOLANT AND AIR, SO BE SURE YOU SELECT THE ONE DESIGNED TO MATCH YOUR GAUGE AND APPLICATION

your right that does sound like a deffective temp sensor, oil temps increase fast under some conditions but without an oil cooler installed they rarely drop rapidly

WITHOUT knowing brands its a guessing game at best, the cheaper ones probably built in india or china, the other made in america. but they could all be made in china now for all I know,
