" hey grumpyvette?
I have purchased a 496 shortblock. I have very little information on this engine. Everything appears new, including machining, Scat cast crank, cap screw I beam rods, forged pistons. I need to buy a flywheel and dampner for this engine. How do I determine if this engine is internally or externally balanced? "

call scat and ask, they produce several 4.25" stroke cranks ,obviously having and part numbers, casting numbers, knowing if its a 2 piece or one piece rear seal crank design and/or having several CLEAR pictures should help, clear pictures of the rear flange and counter weights will also help

be sure the flywheel mounting bolts extend fully thru the crank flange threads, after securely locking the flywheel to the crank flange, but don,t extend much further than the flange outer surface facing the block

most of the cranks I use at 4340 forged SCAT brand cranks, and 4340 forged connecting rods with 7/16" ARP rod bolts. I have also had good luck with the FORGED G.M.cranks, but I have seen a few eagle brand , and cranks from EBAY vendors that were obviously cheaper imports, I don,t think were well machined, and I have used a few SCAT 9000 cast steel cranks that worked out fine in less that peak hp applications, theres usually nothing wrong with a cast crank if you keep piston speeds below about 4000 feet per minute
