When "rare" doesn't mean an investment

image.jpg image.jpg Presented for your approval, a 1968 Mercury Convertible in very good condition. Purchased 4 years ago for $12,000, currently offered for $8,000.
A little more than 1,500 of these were made and I was adamantly against the son of a friend buying this car partially on the grounds the seller used the "rare" bomb in every other sentence. The car is a hard sell now and likely to be sold for even less.
Even though it's a convertible and only 1500 were made its still undesirable to most and nearly impossible to find replacement parts.

yes RARE, is only good when its DESIRABLE by a wide selection of potential buyers,
LIKE 1970 HEMI CUDAS or BOSS 429 MUSTANG's
some cars are RARE simply because the original manufacturer stopped making them,
LIKE EDSEL CONVERTIBLES,
Pontiac Aztek
in any appreciable quantity simply because,
NO ONE WANTED TO BUY THEM

That Mercury club is big into the '50s cars with some early 1960's just like Pontiac. Neither club has even a decent sized following for the late 60's and newer large cars. Very few if if any replacements parts for any large cars 67 and up.

I wasn't able to open your link but if its in decent condition just about any 1960's red convertible is desirable to someone.

Granted, a Hemi, or Chevelle or GTO convertible would probably cost double the Mercury.

Thanks
Randy

Fifteen years ago I had a guy tried to sell me for $5k a 1970 Plymouth Valiant (as a Dodge Charger)... I am not sure if they are rare and more valuable now... - but rightly or wrongly, I passed.
