Which rifle do you own?

solid fixture here in the forum
I wanted to make "wich gun do you own" but since i can only buy long rifle i made it this way :p

Right now i got 4 rifle,
My first was a British Lee Enfield .303 No.4 What a great rifle for its price
Second was the famous M14/M1A Liked the look, wanted something semi-auto for the fun to "have it" now its my favorite rifle for "all around stuff"
Next i got a SKS45 that is an even better rifle for its price then the lee enfield .303 and i can have surplus ammo of its caliber so its really cheap to shoot = favority range rifle for me.
And my last one was the Savage 93R17 buy this one because i liked its look and accuraccy, great rifle cheap to shoot and really accurate but i like more bigger caliber may sell this one later.(her eis a video of this rifle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCnoDKXlSAo)

Now i am looking at some WWII surplus rifle, those are my favorite, but most i want are prohibited here in canada(FN Fal L1A1 or the like) so i may look at something really accurate in a .30 caliber if it can be a War surplus/history rifle ill be really happy.

All have a really low ammo count, i think i should spend more time at the range. I did not go to hunt moose this year, was overly busy with random stuff :/.

Now what do you own? Maby it will give me ideas of what to buy next.

one of my favorites is a BLR in cal 358 win, its killed deer and ELK with a single shot several times
250 grain speer bullet,44 grains of imr 4064 and a 215 fed primer has been my standard 358 win load in my blr AND THE SAME LOAD IVE LOADED FOR THE 4 OTHER GUYS I KNOW WHO USE 358 WIN BLR CARBINES
sight in 3.5" high at 100 yards puts it almost dead on at 200 yards and about 1" low at 300 yards, thats been an effective combo for DECADES
do you hand load? its MUCH cheaper to hand load ammo

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

I've seen what grumpy can do with that BLR rifle, I see him take it on many deer hunts, AMAZING, he can sit down wrap up with the sling and shoot from a sitting position and knock a coke or beer can off a post at easily 200 yards on the first shot

Wow thats impressive. Ill have to look into these rifle, never heard of them before.
And no i am not reloading. I was thinking alot about it (since thats cheaper and i could make better/more accurate ammunition).but the local gunsmith said i would not save much money doing so because am using caliber wich ammo can be availlable for cheap(but at what quality.. metal cased 308 is not something that will get into my rifle's bore) i didnt go ahead about reloading at that time but now i am re-thinking about it :/.

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

Mine is a Weatherby Vanguard in 270-caliber, with a Sightron 4-16 scope. It is relatively inexpensive, robust, and is much more accurate than its user (in my case). The main drawback of Weatherby is in the trigger... it creeps a bit, and even on its softest setting is too stiff for benchrest-shooting. And yes, I did polish the sear for better trigger action. Larger calibers are more impressive for hunting, but if the goal is punching holes in paper targets at 200 yards, I don't see the advantage of larger calibers. And even 270 might be too much... it's just a convenient compromise since this is also a popular deer-shooting rifle (pointless for me, because my state does not allow rifle-hunting of deer).

270 is one of the "common" calibers (223, 243, 270, NATO 308, 30-06 is the usual line-up in North America) and is therefore relatively cheap. I did purchase a die for it, with the idea of a local buddy eventually helping me with reloading. But that has not happened yet. So I buy the usual 20-packs of Winchester 130-grain ammo from Wal-Mart. They were $14/pack a few years ago, but are now $20/pack.

AR-15 type of rifles show up for sale occasionally. With the handle and sights milled off, and a medium-power scope installed instead, this is a great rifle for moderate-range shooting. I shot a friend's "accurized" AR-15 in 223 caliber, and while I can't aspire to Grumpy's accuracy in the field, my bench-rest results were good enough for me to hang the resulting target as a trophy in my living-room. I am however dissuaded by the price - $1000 and up, for a good model. Ironically, a good source is the hunting outfitter mega-stores, some of whom have an excellent library of used guns. Unfortunately there is no information on the gun's usage history, and no way of inspection the trigger action or even the barrel before you buy.

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

Depends on what I'm gonna hunt.

My .257 Roberts, which I hand load for, is my oldest, hand built for me by one of my brothers about 50 years ago. It's a custom Mauser bolt action, full floating barrel. I've hunted goats here on Haleakala Volcano for the last 44 years with it. I know the rifle well, and if there is no wind (uncommon up on Haleakala, which tops out at 10,000 feet) I can drop a goat easily at 100-150 yards. If they don't know where I am, I can usually drop in one for effect in windy conditions to see where it hits, the goats will just look around wondering where that came from, and adjust accordingly and drop a goat with the next shot.

I've done longer shots successfully with the Roberts, but I like to stalk em and get close as I can before touching off a primer. I like to shoot from prone, with a strap, and with a rest if a log or rock is available.

As my three brothers and my parents were always in Lassen County, CA, I used to hunt with them every fall for mule deer. The Roberts was always my gun for deer, have done very well with it over these many years.

Managed to get my name pulled one year in the 60's for a special antelope hunt, and bagged a really nice one with the Roberts up north of Eagle Lake, CA. Still have the mounted head in my shop.

At one point I was going to hunt bear with an Alaska guy I knew well, he was a National Parks employee at Katmai NP, and surfed with me every winter here on Maui. So I bought a .300 win mag, Remington 700, with a great scope, and dies for my reloader. Never got the chance to go hunt bear in Alaska, but have loaded some light bullets to ought six specs and fired it at longer ranges up on Haleakala's south ridge (Skyline Blvd) at goats with some success. Long distance shooting is really an art form, wish I was better at it.

For varmit hunting I like my .223 Ruger Ranch Rifle. Also have a Colt AR15, but for some reason that one scares folks when I take it out, there is a lot of stupid bias here about "assault rifles", even though I've demonstrated that these two rifles are essentially the same firepower, many folks are hopelessy biased by the media and visual imagery. I've been in the Army, I wouldn't want to go into a real firefight with one of these semi autos, give me an M16 and I'll be much better off!

My brothers have a variety of other rifles, .243's, .270's, have fired them all on various hunts, keep coming back to my Roberts. Although I 'd like to do some deer hunting with my 300 win mag with some of my lighter custom hand loads.

I've also done a lot of pig hunting here, in the wet jungle on the NE side of the mountain. There we use dogs and knives, it is too close quarters for guns. Although we always carry a pistol just in case, a .357 mag, but have never had to use it.

Aloha from Maui,
Willy

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

Lassen County, CA WOW! I used to hunt MODOC and the warner wilderness back in the 1970s for mule deer!

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

I know Modoc Co. pretty well, some great wilderness areas there. I lived in the Red Bluff/Redding area from 64 to 67, right on the Sacramento River in a little area called "Bend" (s-turn in the river there). Had a little ranch house right on the banks of the river, great fishing! Some of the guys I worked with there at the Dept. of Water Resources (State) Northern District, were avid hunters and took me up to Modoc Co. a couple of times hunting. Always bagged a couple nice animals on those hunts. I read your hunt story about your hunt there, the idiot down below that meadow who was making noise and ruining your hunt, hate guys like that!

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

I bought a new rifle today it will be used for moose hunting only(i went to moose hunt once only and it was unsuccessfull this year will be my second try with a knowledgable friend)
I will bring her home tomorrow its a Mauser action Interarms Mark X in 300 weatherby mag with a nice wooden stock(i have a lil something for wooden stock) lets hope the recoil wont be too impressive :O.
Its used but has less then 10 shot down the barrel, one owner only he paid it 1200$ with invoice as proof of purchase, he let it go for half the price because it was a little ding on the stock.(well i say he but its her wife selling it i think he is no longer...)

Re: Wich rifle do you own?

Nice, i really should start reloading, i think ill get started with that next year.
Also i have a correction to make it is not a 300 weatherby mag it is a 300 winchester mag caliber(ammo are much less expensive hehe)
here is a picture, i did bring her home today :)
