I recently was asked which route to take , in selecting between a low rise dual quad intake and a tunnel ram intake, the person asking the question has a street driven car powered by a 454 big block chevy engine and his problem is that he wants to maximize the engines potential and likes the looks of a tunnel ram with dual quads but really doesn,t want to add a hood scoop to his car or have carbs sticking thru the hood.
yet hes concerned that the lower height dual quad intakes may be rather restrictive and cost him power.
yeah Frank found a set of the larger port oval port heads , in good condition, for dirt cheap and the local machine shop checked them out and says they don,t need any work done! and he knows where he can find a deal on an older tunnel ram intake, with rebuild-able Holley carbs. which in his particular case I think would be a rolling disaster in that his current car has 3.36:1 rear gears and a stock 4l80e transmission, and it would require the engine have a boost in compression, a cam swap, different rear gears, a higher stall speed converter and cutting a hole in the hood for clearance, along with the new larger oval port heads, so I strongly suggested he consider the low rise dual quad option ,if he was dead set on dual quads and two matched 500-600 cfm edelbrock carbs I simply pointed out that with the transmission shifting at about 5500rpm and the oval port heads effectively restricting power to below 6000rpm and a 3.36:1 rear gear, and those other factors making it darn near impossible to operate effectively much over 5500rpm and his aversion to cutting a hole in the hood his only logical option was the lower rise dual plane air gap style dual quad intake.
I also pointed out that the properly set up and tuned dual quad intake mounted to the new better flowing oval port heads should easily be worth 30-50 hp over his current engine and swapping cams could in theory add an additional 20-30 more hp.

damn I wish he still lived here in Florida like he used too because that car was and is a fun project. I can,t help thinking that a set up similar to this previously posted picture might produce noticeable power improvements when matched to the slightly re-work oval port heads
FRANKS lemans is dark green, with a light green interior , but remarkably similar to this picture I found posted
