I knew the 307 was better but I was wondering why GM went down to the 305. I was wondering if the 307 had flaws or was it just cheaper to drill a smaller bore? :?
Chevy V8 bore & stroke chart
I saw this online and figured I would post it..I am going to add the popular lsx strokers soon

ALL production big blocks used a 6.135" length rod.
from what Ive heard, dyno testing showed the smaller bore, longer stroke combos tend to run better at low rpms with slightly lower emissions , if used with crappy low octane fuel, and be slightly less likely to get into detonation, Id be surprised if that was not a huge factor in the choice.
keep in mind g.m. KNOWS THE ENGINES IN MOST CARS WITH A 305 OR 307 WILL HAVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, AND WILL BE USED AT UNDER 3500 RPM DURING EASILY 80% OR MORE OF THE RUNNING TIME.
longer stroke engines will generally allow a 2.57-3.07:1 rear gear ratio, and over drive transmission,to run better than the shorter stroke combo, thus slightly better mileage, keep in mind it only takes about 60 hp to allow an average car to cruise at 55 mph
