now I may not be typical because I tend to backpack hunt well off roads and stay out in the wilderness for 3-4 days between supply trips to my base camp,, we usually have 4-6 guys in our elk camp, two-to 4 stay in the camp area and 2-to 4 guys back-pack in further following the elk herds, the base camp gets moved as required so keep that in mind.
ok for several years I attempted to find a single ideal knife that would both dress out deer and elk easily and allow me to do camping chores like cutting large poles to make a tripod to hang elk or for a shelter, fire wood etc,
it eventually became clear that a knife small and maneuverable enough to dress game would never have the length and mass to effectively chop wood etc.
I tried lots of combos,
some of the better ones were
a schrade sharp finger and a cold steel trail master
a cold steel master hunter and a cold steel trail master
a cold steel master hunter and a cold steel kukri, or tomahawk
a schrade woodsman and a cold steel Gurkha kukri, or a similar kukri
the sharade woodsman , is a great value, you really will generally
have a very hard time finding anything that works as well for 3-5 times the price,
yes that old timer sharp finger is also a damn good value.
Ive used both and have a small preference for the first or upper knife pictured

two decent values in less expensive hunting knives

I know Ive purchased at least 5 of these sharade woodsman knives over the last 45 years , my "HUNTING BUDDIES" keep borrowing them and I never seem to get them back, luckily they are not expensive at about $28 each but they work real well gutting and skinning elk.
the last combo is what I found the best compromise
THE MORE I USE THIS KUKRI THE MORE INDISPENSABLE IT BECOMES

anyone else found it takes two blades to live efficiently in the wilderness

this is a darn good value in a skinning and dressing game knife

now if your looking for a dirt cheap knife of above average quality for its price both of the knives above do a decent job, Ive used both for many years and while each has its good/bad features both are very handy, I prefer the woodsman by a slim margin as its a bit more useful in my opinion , but either will dress out deer or elk quite effectively
when combined with an ez-lap pocket diamond hone
youll also need a rust preventative oil
the new wd40 rust preventative spray works far better than the older version

Ive found this Kukri far more useful than a hatchet, for various reasons and if you ever dress out out elk you know that theres times where that a heavy blade or a hatchet can be useful and can be used to make the job easier
I almost always carry a kukri and a decent general purpose skinning knife, in my day pack, along with a small game hoist /block & tackle and diamond hone pocket sharpener plus lots of 2 gallon ziploc bags.
theres no way in my opinion that a single small knife can perform all the chores, youll occasionally need, while out in the boonies, youll find you need an AXE, a hatchet, tomahawk or kukri for some projects

reading through this and other threads on similar subjects theres been a good many quality knives posted, (many I'd like to own) but I can,t help but wonder how many other guys like myself , do carry a second larger blade of some type, I'm betting a great deal of the guys that hunt farther from the camp or back pack in rather than hunt near a road and truck do!
many of my friends that back pack in for elk hunts carry a tomahawk , I prefer the kukri, but I can,t imagine being able to function for days at a time back packing into remote areas with just a 4" skinning knife
