Wisps Of Smoke Coming From Breather

The roller cam requires assembly lube on the cam journals, right ? Not on the lobes. I should soak the lifters.
 
Ive always suggested anyone smear the bearing journals and the lobes with assembly lube it won't hurt a thing,
and it may prevent roller lifter wear issues a dry un-lubed surface might have at start up.
soaking the lifters in MMO, or at least oil and installing them wet will help as will pre-priming the oil galleries

yeah it won,t hurt a darn thing on roller cams either,
and while its mandatory on non-roller liters,
it helps on roller lifters because they operate at higher spring load rates than flat tappet cams do.

yes the additives in the the quart of MMO you can add to your crank case oil, do a good job of breaking up and holding in suspension oil sludge and transporting it to the oil filter

FWIW - During my brake I poked around under the car a little more. Mostly, I was checking how much one piece oil pan gasket I’d have to clean up. I don’t look forward to that job. It seems the fellow installed the gasket with The Right Stuff on the pan and some squeezed over on to the block. Great !

While looking up I noticed something I had t before. The block is a four-bolt. Now I seem to recall reading that it’s actually less desirable on 400s.

I also noticed the crank - I think it’s forged.

Incidentally- two oil pan bolts were weeping. Do you guys put RTV on your oil on bolts ?
 
look back on your posts on here and your cam post someone did mention that either Indy Cars or 302

recommended operational temp range is just a tiny bit different from what Ive seen, one has about a 30F higher recommended temp, youll never get close in a properly operating engine to either

YES, even if it says no sealant is required I generally put a bit of sealant on both sides of the one piece synthetic oil pan gasket

DO NOT USE YELLOW 3M weather strip adhesive as it slowly dissolves in oil over months

Does one ever put sealant on bolt threads if it looks like oil leak is coming from bolts ? Or does that make no sense at all.

No locktite either to prevent from shaking loose ?

You see how those oil pan bolts have sealer on them? That's so they don't vibrate loose, but you need to use sealant on the 2 back corner bolts. If you don't you will have an oil leak there, or so I was told.
