Hi,

I'm planning to rebuild my truck engine this winter and have been searching the web for information. I've been lurking here for about a week and have found more than I even knew I wanted to know. In most of the other forums the informaion I was looking for consisted of several different and often conflicting opinions without supporting data, was hard to find, or just didn't exist. Not so here; the more I look the more I find.

My project is a stock 1986 GMC K3500 w/ smog choked 350, TH400, NP205, and 4.56:1 limited slip. My objective is to rebuild the engine for substantially increased low end torque and top end HP, replace the auto with an SM465 4-speed, still pass IM testing, and of course, stove bolt reliabillity. My engine goal is 300 ftlb @ 1000 rpm and at least 375 hp @ 5000-5500 rpm. I know, I know,,, 375 hp doesn't sound very exciting. But, it's perhaps 150 hp more than stock and with a bottom end that should pull like a mule team. I think it qualifies for "High Performance" in it's own right.

Anyway that's me. I'm beginning to formulate a plan for the build and I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions. There's one nagging question that's been running around in my head for awhile now but I'll ask that elsewhere. Still digesting the tons of information you already have on here. Thanks for the putting this great site together.

thanks ! tell your friends!

we all try to put forth as much USEFUL and in many cases documented info as we can

Welcome to the forum Bart ! If you have all Winter in Alaska to build an engine, then there should be no rush for time. :)

I have relatives that moved to Alaska and homesteaded around Anchorage back around 1950s I'm guessing. I remember seeing pictures of the big earth quake as a kid.

Just curious, how did you find this forum ??? .......Where abouts do you live in Alaska ?

Yep, the winters are long here. There is of course other work that needs doing on my truck aswell as the engine so it should keep me pretty busy.

Eagle River is about 15 miles north of and seperated from Anchorage by the bases; Elmendorf AFB and FT Richardson. I always say Alaska is the biggest small town in the world so, may have met your family.

Thanks for the welcome.
