theres some info here

NO they were not ALL FWD some 472-500 caddys were RWD,cars and ALL those engines can be bolted to TH400 transmisions with the correct bolt pattern, keep in mind the stock 500 caddy engine has over 500 ft lbs of torque and with a cam and head swap 600 ft lbs of torqure is extremely easy to obtain.
Here's a pic of the trans mount.

check some of the links, 400hp/500 ft lbs is easy to get, redline depends on components used but stock 5000 rpm is about max

this cam

and this intake

Cadillac 472-500 V8
Performer Cadillac (idle-5500 rpm)
This Performer is designed for 1968-76 Cadillac 472 and 500 cubic-inch engines. For either square- or spread-bore carbs, #2115 is the first intake designed specifically for high-performance Cadillacs using standard heads. Like all Edelbrock Performers, this manifold increases torque and horsepower from idle to 5500 rpm. The broad power band is ideal for high-performance street and engine swap applications. Specs on this non-EGR manifold include a carb pad height that’s 3" taller than stock. Dropped divider wall evens air/fuel ratio throughout the rpm range. Stock air conditioning compressor will not fit.

work well together

This engine is in there tight, but i didn't have to cut anything.

this may interest you guys, hit the (link above) then hit ( watch)

notice the CADDY V8 ENGINE in the car has the distributor in the FRONT OF THE ENGINE, (one reason its a good canidate for the swap!)
It's a th400 trans with a 368 caddy v8 rwd oil pan. The motor mount almost sits on the original mount, i had to make a 1/2" plate by 3" X4" to space the motor mount ahead about 2 1/2".

the problem with the north star is the very limited amount of speed parts support and its limited displacement. ID strongly suggest finding a 472-500 caddy if your into caddy engines, or going with a CHEVY V8 if your looking for an EASIER swap with a huge supply of info and parts availability.
many salvage yards can supply a 472-500 caddy engine for under $400, Id bet you could have a reasonable combo up and running if you had a complete caddy donor car, and the datsun for under $3k

BTW CADDY BLOCK HUGGER HEADERS!!

IF you were local and had a decent budget set aside IM sure my freinds could quickly install the caddy northstar and get it driveable, but its very unlikely to be a cost effective swap

yeah A 472-500-540 caddy engine, with a few carefully selected modifications can produce damn impressive power for a good deal less money that some other options

Just 425 ci too.

I will keep an eye out for Caddie 472-500 engines here. If I find a deal I will buy it.

if you like that olds 425 youll love a caddy 500 once you stick a decent cam and intake manifold and headers on it, try to find the 1970-71 version

keep in mind the FORD 460 high performance intake manifolds fit the 500 caddy engines with an adapter plate this gives you a huge advantage in intake choice

an adapter plate, a cam change and this intake with a 850 holley works wonders on a 500 caddy if you have hood clearance
