1966 Chevelle Project

Unforgiven

solid fixture here in the forum
I finally pulled the trigger on a new project. The wife and I drove 800 miles from Michigan to Newport News Virginia ..... trying to stay ahead of the ice storm that spanned from Texas to Virginia. The trip was smooth all the way down until we got into Richmond Virginia, That's were we hit rain/ice conditions, (though not too bad
from what we are used to in Michigan) . An hour later we arrived at our destination at 4:00pm in what seemed like a full on monsoon. We quickly looked over the car and gave the man a $500 deposit as good faith. We were too tired and I did not want to spend the next 2 hours loading a car and the extra parts that came with it in the rain, with darkness coming on. The next morning around 7:00 am I discovered about 1/4" sleet on the trailer, and the rain had not let up all night. Lucky for us it let up around an hour later... The car does not run and had no drive shaft, and the trailer is 34" high...covered in sleet. He said we could push it onto the trailer.... (ha ha ),
I suggested that we just use the tow strap I carry, and he could drive along side my trailer with his truck and pull the car onto the trailer, saving us both from a possible injury. After the car was loaded... ( Knowing that I faced another 14 hour drive and through the mountains), I spent the next hour chaining down the car while laying in the sleet on the trailer. We went back to the hotel room and got a hot shower and changed into some dry clothes and were on the road headed back home by 11:00am. We had just heard about the pile up in Texas
and I was a little nervous, cause we were in the same storm when we left Virginia. We got lucky and drove out of it about 2 hours later, and had smooth sailing all the way home ( which was 2:30 am ).

The car is going to media blast this summer.. When they give me the steering wheel and Vin number back...
I will start ordering parts...

Here are a couple pics of what I'm starting with.

The last pic is what was posted on his post. I did not want to snap anther one in the snow while it's on the trailer. The rear window is laying in the back seat. I did not want to go down the highway with it just
sitting in place not attached to the car. The front window is sitting in place but I put rubber straps over it to firmly hold in in place... The seats are not original.. I think he mentioned they were out of a nova..I will be looking for originals anyway.
I'm planning a 4-5 year time frame for the rebuild..

congrats on acquiring a new project car,
I hope it proves to be in easily rebuildable condition and your not faced with a great deal of hidden rust damage

Thank you Grumpy.. From what I seen, The frame is solid, and someone has redone this car before. The firewall has been replaced with a smooth firewall. It looks clean in the engine compartment.
I can see that most of the panels are going to need to be replaced though. Including that Horrible looking hood. It is a first class hack job. He states it has the original 327 engine.... But I doubt it is numbers matching.

Congrats on the new project !

If I remember correctly, this is for the wife ? What made you go so far for this car ?

Yes Rick, it is for the wife. We have been looking for about 5 years for the car. They either are way to priced for junk or waaay to priced
to drop $ 40 + thousand at one time. We seen this one for a reasonable price and figured we may as well go for it. The car came with another parts car, an additional engine,
and a few other things but I felt they were not worth the cost to have them shipped back. So I left them with the seller. I did get the doors , trunk deck, and hood from the parts car though.
The frame was rotted bad on the parts car. The extra 327 engine needed a new crank . With that in mind I figured it would need a hell of alot more than that.

one of the guys I went to college with (larry) purchased a 1966 chevelle with a 350 hp 396 with a muncie 4 speed,
for $800 as it was in pretty poor condition and already had over 80 k miles
he beat that original engine to death in short order,
now remember this was back in 1969-1970
so we did the research and assembled a 402 version (new pistons and mildly larger bore)with 12.7:1 compression and a serious cam with the 781 oval port heads,
a chevy 3959180 solid lifter cam that required new valve springs and cylinder head machine work on the heads,
we added a Edelbrock dual plane intake, a 780 cfm holley, carb, headers, a full 3" exhaust and glass pack mufflers and a 4.56:1 ring/pinion gear set
the car sounded ok, and ran mid to-high 12 second times which at that time was impressive
it was demonstrably faster than most other muscle cars at the time!

Unforgiven, I sure as hell wish you lived closer to me! That was my first car, 66 chevelle SS, 396, muncie 4 speed, 4.11 rear gear! It was a bonding thing for my Daddy and I, we did everything with that car! New brakes, new radiator, rebuilt the tranny, and when we got to the engine the tired old 396 was wore out! Back in those days (75-79) 1500 bux was a lot of money. Bored it .030, pistons were TRW, cam was Crane, Mallory duel point dizzy, Holley 750, and hooker headers. Locally there was an old country road, we had a measured 1/4 mile and I won several Friday night races with that car, my Daddy even went and watched several times. He even drove it on one race, he lost the race cuz he missed 3rd gear and the camaro blew him away!
The picture below is what it looked like, mind it wasn't as cherry at the one pictured, and mine had Cragar Mags and Mickey Thompson tires. I had 50 series the back!

I would put in a big block, T56 tranny! Build around that!

Well..... a BB is not out of the question. But, I have (2) SBC blocks. The one is my truck race motor which ,as I have posted,
is getting a new Callies Rotating ass'y (because I am scared that the current scat 9000 crank is not going to survive long at those power levels).

My plan is to reuse the Scat rotating ass'y in another block, then lower the power levels to a street friendly package.

This would save me some cash in the long run.

By the way.. The car came with a TH400. I want to install a 200R trans for the overdrive.
The car is going to build for a healthy daily driver for the wife. She will be putting on some occasional highway
miles, so it has to be friendly.

I miss those old days, when all we thought about were cars and chasing the mini skirts

Man, I loved it back then, girls wore sexy hose with dresses and you were a slight bend over away from seeing a nice ass!

Look up the vin number and find out what was in it when it was built, if it was a BBC , chit man go for it!

LOL... The only thing I'm doing for a few weeks is looking out the window at it sitting on the trailer.. It is way to damn cold out there!:)

But... The guy told me the 327 was the original engine in it.

And YEA... I miss those days also. Thou my haydays were late 70"s- 80"s

What made you go so far for this car ?

The truth is.... The wife scared me into it.. Her words exactly... " Jim... The first thirty four years were about you, The next thirty four years
are about ME ! " I was so shocked at that statement that all I could say was..."That sounds expensive!"
She told me to " Get in the truck, cause were going on a road trip and your building me MY car."

Grumpy.. I was just on that site this morning (chevellestuff.net) There is alot of good info there.

One thing I need to ask that has been bothering me.

I see the vin plate on the firewall... But The vin tag is missing on the door frame pillar.
Is this a problem?
