this woodsman (above) and the sharp finger (below),are both a darn good value in a skinning and dressing game knife,
both work, you may prefer one vs the other,
but both get the job done and at the very low price,
you could buy both and give the one you don,t prefer to a son or friend

now if your looking for a dirt cheap knife of above average quality for its price both of the knives above do a decent job, Ive used both for many years and while each has its good/bad features both are very handy, I prefer the woodsman by a slim margin as its a bit more useful in my opinion , but either will dress out deer or elk quite effectively
when combined with an ez-lap or similar pocket diamond hone

I vastly prefer a small HIGH QUALITY sheath/belt knife

kukri2.jpg

I,ve found this Kukri far more useful than a hatchet, for various reasons, and if you ever dress out out elk you know that there's times where that a heavy blade or a hatchet can be useful and can be used to make the job easier, but for some people the weight and length, of the kukri plus having it as a second blade tool, make it less than ideal,
if you do much long distance back packing you'll rather rapidly find you'll need TWO different edged tools, a small nimble slicer/Skinner, and a chopping tool that must be longer and heavier with more mass.
something like a 8"-10"
bowie can be used for both but its not close to ideal for either job.
but if you must have only one blade you can get by with a cold steel trail master

HERES A FEW PICTURES OFF THE INTERNET OF KNIVES FORGED FROM RAIL ROAD SPIKES

If you have several local guys you know who produce those knives from rail road spikes , you get to see the mixed results, now
,OBVIOUSLY if your familiar with knife making.
the skill of the person making the blade and its heat treatment both will have a huge effect on the quality of the finished product produced,
and while those spikes are a decent source , of fairly easy to find steel of decent quality they are far from ideal, in rust resistance or edge holding ability in my experience.
personally I have found the knives forged from old truck leaf springs vastly superior AND amazingly you can actually get them at decent prices at the link posted here below.
now I'll be the first guy to say the finish quality needs a bit of custom work but the basic blades are very well made for the price,
frankly I was not expecting near the quality for the price ,
and yes I purchased several and will purchase more,
if you don,t mind having to do a bit of final fit and polish work these are a great deal

personally Ive found that theres no way a single blade type or size can handle all my blade needs.
for hunting you need something small and nimble enough to make dressing out game and skinning reasonably easy ,
some guys get by with a small blade, folder, most find a fixed blade with a belt sheath, has advantages
and that rules out its usefulness for effective chopping, cutting larger objects and pretty much limits its effective use, as a general camp tool,
that effectively forces you into selecting a smaller knife and a noticeably heavier and more masive blade.
now some guys think a hatchet or tomahawk is the better choice for the larger edged tool.
Ive been hunting for over five decades, and Ive tried a good many combos, if your persistent most can be made to work.
personally I think you want too select a dependable tool, but most of us don,t want to invest a great deal of money if we can avoid it,
you certainly may not agree with my choices but heres a few I found worked well

for the smaller blade
(damn near anything in a 3"-5" with a good steel that holds an edge can be made to function)

for the larger blade length and mass are important to function
