bit of shotgun self defence info

if your JUSTIFIED in shooting any home invader, AT ALL, your justified in use of LETHAL force
thus a lethal LOAD in the shotguns, use is MANDATORY, slugs will penetrate much to far through walls,
in a typical home, use of #4-up too-00 buckshot is the better option.

if you have doubts as to how effective a shotgun can be in skilled hands,
watch this short video below

you calculate energy of a projectile with this formula

bullet weight in grains times velocity x velocity divided by 450240= ft lbs of energy

thus a1 0z slug at 1600fps =2487 ft lbs
thus a 1 oz slug at 1900 fps=3507 ft lbs

A single 00 buckshot pellet weighs approximately 53.8 grains
most buckshot shells hold 8-9 pellets and push the charge to about 1300 fps-1600 fps dependent on ammo used
thus 430 grains at 1300fps= about 1614 ft lbs of energy, but the projectiles will leave 8 separate impact points similar to being shot
with 8 22lr handgun rounds fired simultaneously tend to hit randomly in an area that expands at a rate of about 1" per yard of distance in most common buckshot shell from most guns (there are exceptions)
both the slug or buckshot loads can be lethal at close range, if shot placements correct,
but the slug will vastly out penetrated the buckshot, it's rare for buckshot to exit, at longer ranges,
a center mass body hit, but that's not always true of good slug ammo, or buckshot ammo.

(much more velocity than average slug ammo)

the old and now the new ITHACA 12 ga mod 37 are really well made

the testing shows conclusively that 00 buck is very effective
in most shotguns, but be aware the different manufacturers produce ,
many different shells, with difference's in payload velocity and shot cup design that has an effect,
on buckshot spread and velocity you'll see.

watch the video above , as it provides useful info on shotgun ballistics and resulting damage assessment
basically a center mass, upper 3/5ths chest wound ,from a 10 ga-or 12 ga loaded with 00 buck tends to be ,
very rapidly lethal at ranges under about 40-50 ft.

many experienced law enforcement & hunters load shotguns with a mix , most defensive shot guns hold 5-8 shells,

when hunting deer/ hogs or for defensive use, (typical 3 shot magazine limits are for bird/duck hunters)
where the first shot to fire is a slug, assuming the target should be reasonably close and not moving rapidly,

followed by 2-3 00 buck shot, then the rest of the magazine capacity with slugs, on the assumption,
that if you need a second-4th, shot the targets moving rapidly,

if you still need to shoot after -3-4 shells the targets rapidly moving away or its behind cover,
where the remaining slugs in the magazine provide extra reach and penetration

this video is well worth watching through
keep in mind several of the designs ,
have been redesigned, and are better now

a good example of what 12 ga buckshot can do at shorter ranges

a good informative post worth watching through,
notice #4 buckshots rather effective,
but it pales compared to 00 buckshot at ranges less than 30 yards

and slugs certainly provide lethal results,
out past 75 yards while still accurate in most smoothbore guns

this video points out a few valid points,
but as with most videos and opinions,
the context matters and you must take the facts,
and your personal conditions you are most likely to face,
into account. range matters, your potential opponent,(s) matters
your skill level matters, your shotguns spread maters,
and obviously.. ammo used MATTERS

this videos helpful if your not familiar with buck shot use,
as the video shows use of buckshot really is limited to about 40 yards max,
now admittedly some shotguns perform better than others but the ,
40 yard limit is a good rule
