I loaned one of my elk hunt friends a deer/elk rifle for last season as his 338 savage bolt action hes used for many years was being worked on,and the parts were not in at the beginning of the season and he did not own a second center-fire big game rifle.
we met at the range so he could return the rifle, and we discussed his hunt experience,
I gave him a choice of several rifles last year, and he selected a single shot 300wby from my stash, after reloading the cartridges for his deer hunt with 165 grain speer bullets and a stiff load of imr 4831 and 215 fed primers Id suggested as he was only hunting deer this trip, and sighting it in , he left for Colorado to hunt mule deer, he stated the only decent legal mule deer he saw was at about 260 yards and in some light sage/oak brush, he sat down, put the cross hairs on the upper shoulder and squeezed off a shot, the deer vanished, not a twitch, not a bit of moving brush, nothing, no running dear.......both his partner, and he, assumed a missed shot, but just to be sure they walked over and searched, the area, eventually finding the mule deer with a very pronounced exit wound, and indications it had dropped instantly where it was standing, as fast as a popped balloon deflates.
hes never had that happen, with his 338 win mag, every deer hes ever shot, ran a short distance then folded.he had always assumed that it just took a few seconds for deer to bleed out!
he is both impressed with the damage the rifle caused and not happy with the loss of much of the front shoulder meat, but the thing that impressed him the most was the deer almost "vaporizing" as he put it.

The first deer I shot did that. It wasn't 260 yds though, more like a button buck shot at 50 yds with a 30-30. But you could tell by the way he fell over he was a dead deer standing when the bullet punched free of the far side of his hide. It was a lung shot, but I didn't field dress it, so I don't know for sure what was or wasn't hit.
