Hunting Hand Load Data For A 30/06

now the 30/06 has been a popular cartridge for well over 100 years,
and it was the U.S. army preferred rifle cartridge through the first, world war,
second world war and
the Korean war conflict,
where it always performed well.
its one of the top 10 most sold and reloaded cartridges, in the U.S.A.
and its been used very successfully on deer and elk etc. for over 100 years,
and has been for many many decades, as the cartridge most other calibers are judged against.

I was recently asked to load up a couple boxes of ammo by one of the local guys, my first question...
what game are you hunting? and what rifle will you be using?
keep in mind the vast majority of deer are shot at well under 250 yards

it turns out hes only hunting local deer and hogs, and knowing that,
he will have zero issues with the handloads I made,
AS THE AMMO IS THE SAME COMBO I HAVE USED FOR 5 DECADES
to use in his 760 remington pump action 30/06,
as I used the same load I used for 5 decades in my 30/06
50 grains of ww760 WHICH produce GOOD GROUPS AND ABOUT 2350 FPS AND EXCELENT PENETRATION AND EXPANSION.
AND YES I.m well aware that the 150-165 grain bullets can shoot flatter and hit at a higher velocity, but they also tend to destroy more venison,
and occasionally fail to exit, thus less blood trail.
yes the higher velocity bullet impact can marginally reduce the distance game runs if the heart / lung shot placement is not ideal.(see deer anatomy diagram below)
aim for area (B) and youll never have issues with the 180-200 grain speer bullets

I loaded about 100 cartridges in his brass using the 200 speer bullets and WW760 powder and a 215 fed primer,
he called later to say he was consistently getting about 1.3" 100 yard groups off the bench rest at the local range.
SIGHTED IN AT the 100 yard range on a target like that posted below,
WHAT IVE USED FOR DECADES, AT 3.5" HIGH AT 100 YARDS IS GOING TO BE ABOUT 3" HIGH AT 200 YARDS AND ABOUT 3" LOW AT 300 YARDS

now you have hundreds of very accurate and very effective options, and most people choose the 150-165 grain bullets
personally, I like to use 180-200 grain bullets,
AS DECADES OF FIELD PROVEN RESULTS PROVE,
THAT HANDLOAD WORKS ON DEER AND EVEN ELK.
OBVIOUSLY KNOWING YOUR GAMES ANATOMY AND VITAL ORGAN LOCATIONS IS MANDATORY TO GET GOOD RESULTS
