I’m Getting Rid Of This Pos!

Ok, I don’t drive my ‘06 crew cab Duramax LBZ all that much. I should have never bought it in the first place. Hearing people say how great the fuel mileage was, I asked and asked everybody I ever ran into that had any connection to a Duramax “What is your mileage on the diesel?” Id get vague answers, never anything to judge by.
At the time I ordered this truck, diesel cost less than regular gas at the pump. I got employee pricing and zero % financing, but still had to pay over $43,000.
I installed a bed liner, a bed cover, otherwise fully loaded except for cold weather block warmer and rear DVD player (had one in my ‘04 GMC truck and wasn’t that impressed for a $1000 more!).
So enough for the back story.
Let’s see, I’ve had it for about 15 years and today it has a true 72,066 miles without ever an accident, collision whatever you want to call it.

I just don’t have any need for it. Used it a few times to travel far and wide with my trailer to pick up or take my cars to auctions and such, take home some furniture bought at the auctions and few other easy duty tasks.
The past 5 years and I’ve been in the hospital more than being home so I don’t drive it much. A harsh ride, lousy stereo and the inspections!

Ok, so It sits a lot. Why is it throughout my life I have restored field and barn finds, old wishful project cars, some cars parked 5 years or more without any care what so ever. I’ve put air in flat tires, flushed out old gas (if any), dropped in a new battery, new oil and maybe some fiddling around with the carb and few other items (if needed), but I’ve had a few of these cars start up and run. Some of these cars needed the obvious items any car sitting so long wold need, but nothing really big.

My truck sat for 3,4 maybe 6 to once it sat for nearly 8 months between its annual state inspections and when I take it in for these inspections, It’s always a list of expensive repairs needed to pass. Two years ago it sat for the longest, nearly 8 months. Both batteries dead and won’t hold any charge, all brake rotors too rusted (inside) to pass, brake lines rusted, brake calipers (2) leak, new tires back when parked were dry rotted And a tension pulley seized (about $2,000 in repairs and the shop doesn’t honor my request to save old parts).
This year it sat for 3 months, the last remaining brake line not replaced rusted and leaks, the line at the fuel tank leaks, the steering gear leaks like a sieve and a few bad light bulbs ($1100 to repair). Why does it seem the Older cars can sit and the floor, rockers and quarter panels rust out but everything else just needs a good cleaning?
Can you possibly imagine how frustrated I feel, aside from everything else, it wasn’t that long ago this work was an easy and satisfying job for me to do in my own garage fully loaded with tools and a two post lift? It pisses me off I lost the physical ability to do anything and I have to rely on others and I feel like I’m constantly being taken.

I have to get rid of this truck! I’ll work a price this weekend that will be too good to diddle around with anybody. The last vehicle I sold was so dam cheap I told the guy On the phone, if it’s not all that I said it is and you offer me a lessor price, just say goodbye, you can’t have it at any price. He came over and took a one minute look and handed me the cash.

I feel your pain.
I own a 2008 duramax LTZ and have for the most part been very happy. We also store the truck 8 months out of the year in a heated garage. I have been told that
this is not good for the truck . It is hard on the o-rings and seals .
What happens is the o-rings can dry out and cause air to be sucked into the fuel system.
Yes ... The damn trucks are HARD on the batteries.. There are a few things that put a constant drain on them . I just replaced both batteries this spring.
I bought the Autozone Platinums .

The truck is sitting at the dealer as of now!
The truck stalled on me and would only crank over... A friend came to my rescue with his computer and plugged it in....It was full of past codes, but he could
not find anything that caused it to stall. He cleared all the codes and it fired up damn near instantly!!

Two weeks later it did the same thing to the wife and I when we went out to dinner. I had to have it towed to the dealer which was about 0.3 miles away.
That was on July 9 ..... and they still have it!

They cant figure out the reason it stalled. But said a few codes showed that the EGR needed to be replaced, a coolant sending unit was bad, Thermostats
were stuck open, The oil cooler needed to be replaced for some strange reason,( which I demanded to see the issue BEFORE they replaced it) , And the dreaded fuel filter needed to be replaced! All to the tune of $2400.00

After talking with them yesterday...they are still waiting on a part.

I still LOVE this truck though! We have averaged 16 mpg which I feel should be a bit higher... but it gets the same milage when pulling a 14,000 load behind it too!
I am hoping the new EGR valve will help increase the milage but my hopes are not that high.

With that low of miles on your truck...and being you stored it (no rust) I would think you should see mid $20,000 for it if you sell it.

I am at the beginning stages of this horrible feeling!!!
And I feel they are going to get worst!
Coty at the young age of 30 .... has alot of fun poking at me because of what I can't physically do anymore..But he is always there in a heartbeat for me!!!!

Thanks for your feedback. One thing I should mention, no room for garage storage so it sits in the driveway (always leaking on the blacktop.
If I don’t drive it for two weeks or more it won’t start. I fond that I have to pop the hood and pump up the fuel on the top of the fuel sensor. Get back in and it starts right up. One good thing, it’s a dam fast truck with the 4:10 rear.
I have a 5.3 AWD Savanna cargo van I bought brand new in 2004. It now has 92,000 miles and never , well almost never needs any repairs. Bought it when I had a bunch of rental properties and I needed to fix anything so I filled it with my tools and supplies, carried a few ladders on top. One time I was busy and let someone else do the brakes all around. Well they didn’t tighten the caliper bolts so the calipers came off while driving. In front they became lodged inside the rim and hung by the ABS wires. About the time of 35,000 miles the inside tie rod needed replacing. The brake light bulb (center top) burns out too frequently and long periods sitting (before I got trickle chargers) caused a Bad battery a couple times. And that’s it. I love the van but I don’t need it.
It’s a great van, it has automatic side panels that open on both sides to access bins and shelves, with the all wheel drive and fully loaded it will make a great low cost van for most any contractor.

Bingo!
Having to pump the fuel primer is a sure sign that the fuel system has a worn seal somewhere.
I have been told that the fuel filter head has known to go bad for some reason... I always thought that the o-ring on the filter
was the problem.. I think some amount of crud can develop around that o-ring and not let it seal correctly. I have actually
seen where I installed one a few years ago and the damn filter pinched the o-ring as I spun the filter on.
The head is aluminum so it stands to reason that it would corrode somewhat. I just try and clean it with scotch pad
before I install the new filter. And YEA.... those filters are damn expensive!!

That sucks about your brakes... It is worse when you know how it should be done, but have to rely on someone else and hope
they do it correctly.

You offer some good reasoning about those “O” rings. I get the truck back today. Coincidentally the shop “said” they had to replace the filter head because it leaked. They never bothered to call me about this, just went ahead assuming that’s ok with me. I didn’t sign any service agreement giving them permission to do as they may.
Oh, do you have that annoying steering rattle you hear and feel when you hit the slightest bump in the road? I found out it’s a somewhat small plastic - I’ll call it a bushing of sorts? I bought one, it goes in the lower part of the steering column. With bad knees it’s impossible to do this repair. I have a source for Wix diesel fuel filters when you buy 3 or more. I can get back to you with the info if you like.

If it wasn’t so hot and humid I would have taken the truck back and do what I could on my own, I do have some good days. This shop used to be good, saved the old parts for me, was a little better priced than the big dealers. Some 20 year old took over and raised his rates to the top, doesn’t even have a waiting room in this old dump. Trying to find some better place, guess I’ll have to travel

I agree they should have informed you on the fuel head...but it is a good part to throw money at. I feel if they dont replace mine... I am
going to replace it myself...with the help of Coty of coarse.

I do not have the rattle you speak of. I will take note of it though.
I upgraded my upper and lower A arms to a "cognito tubular system" I can now just replace the balljoints when needed instead of having to buy
the complete A arm and joint which was not serviceable.
I did have a problem with the "service trailer brake system" code popping up... when it pops up, you have NO trailer brakes until you turn off ignition and restart. Found that it was a $30 modual located between the rear wheel well and the frame. Took about 40 minutes to replace but it cured the problem.

It is DAMN hard to find a good diesel mechanic in our neck of the woods!!! If you do...they are EXPENSIVE !!!
But... owning a diesel can't be beat if you use it for what it is intended to be used for.

I have the feeling if I rode it hard and put the miles on some of the problems might not have appeared. I just remembered another repair. One day a couple summers ago I got into the truck and no AC. Fan worked, plenty of refrigerant in the system. It turned out to be a plug in control module under the passenger side dash. I believe it was about $20 online and held in with two 10mm hex head Bolts.
Btw, I have a brand new, in the box (Traxx brand) front end leveling kit for these trucks ‘98 to ‘06. It takes the front end drop and levels the truck with the rear. I’m asking 50% of the cheapest sale price you can find (new) anywhere and a split of the cheap postage (If agreeable). Pay me after you receive it. I had it advertised here a while back, but the one taker was gone the next day.
Do you have that huge round cone air filter on yours? It was an optional filter on my truck. I found a cross reference NAPA part number that’s identical to OE. I have to find it so let me know. Ever have to replace the glow plugs in the LBZ? I have a fault code for bank 3 and 7, but it still starts up with out them.

That's funny! I had the same damn problem in a different truck with the plug under the dash.

I have our truck leveled out already. It has air bags in the rear for assist.
I have 33" tall tires ...did not want to go taller cause the truck is used for towing .
Our truck is a 2008....it has the LMM engine, but yes, it has a large cone style filter down in the box.
I believe it is an aftermarket system. We bought the truck from someone else who installed it.
Never had glow plug issues yet..

That’s a nice one, newer than mine obviously. In 2006 the LBZ was a late year offering. From all that I have read that motor is a very desirable diesel, even better than the diesels over the next 5 years.
This is a picture of one like mine in the same color, I just have the factory polished aluminum wheels and the higher hood for the HD2500.They had the classic like mine but a month later the newer style came out, wish I got that one!FD3DD67B-9384-410F-9672-E4B588B2233F.jpeg

I rode in a friend’s 2016 after he got his. Rode like a Impala and I want that rear camera and GPS system!

I also would like to have those features!

I see you can buy a backup camera that replaces the cargo light. I have this on my christmas wish list.
It is always a pain in the butt trying to locate the goose hitch when backing under it blind.

I was going to ask the dealer if the newer navigation systems would interact with the older trucks...
I would really like to keep the same dash look instead of it looking like there were add on's.

My biggest complaint with our truck is the drain tube from the sun roof down the "A" pillar
rattles in windy conditions.. drives me nuts!

There’s a 4X4 shop a couple miles from me, they want $3,800 to do the OEM GPS and backup camera refit. My understanding it’s a difficult and tight job if you are not experienced. The radio has to be changed too or send out the unit to a factory radio repair shop.
