Just RTV on trans?

The factory used some kind of sealant on the 4L80E, whats the difference on a Turbo 400?

About the only thing I haven’t tried yet, tighten the 13 bolts to feel. The shop wants $286 to swap gaskets and refill, I think that is crazy.
Anybody ever just use RTV and no gasket?

I may not be correct but Ive used this and had no issues
why not visit a local trans rebuild shop and ask for advice , maybe buy a gasket set?

I conveyed the wrong message. Im still having trouble with my TH400 leaking fluid around the gasket And I wondered why its ok the factory used sealant only on the new transmissions but people poo-poo’ed the idea when I asked if I can just use RTV on the old 3 spd trans.
All the mating surfaces are clean, absolutely flat (aside from the ridge formed into the oe pan rim) and I followed the factory recommended torque setting.
The first leak was with the black rubber type gasket and then I tried Rick’s choice, the $30 Lube Locker gasket. They would not give any recommendation for torque on their gaskets so I just used the factory setting - that leaked however slower.
And I did ask a well known tranny mechanic for his advice and this is what he said “Even we get leaks after following guideline! Just snug the bolts down in the cris-cross pattern using the cork gasket.”
I really don’t want to experiment anymore. The next procedure I want to be done with it!

Oh and yes, Brian told me about the Aviation gasket seal. Its a sticky but really thin. I used it on the thermostat and perhaps I didn’t do that correctly because that leaked too.

For years i had leaking pan gaskets on a TH350, nothing helped, turned out to be the gear selector shaft seal that leaked and filled the pan gasket seem. No leak when running, i guess the oil level was below the seal when running?
