Looking For A Decent Cartridge And Rifle Combo In A Deer/elk Rifle





a great many of the rifles most people have purchased and used for decades,
were developed mostly to sell people new rifles,

most people buy rifles that are chambered for cartridges that are less than ideal for most of the hunts ,
they want to be effective with the rifles they currently own, and those cartridges are frequently less than ideal.,
most rifle cartridges are rather limited in the applications that they perform well in,
and in many cases you can find a few common cartridges, that cover a far more applications much better,
and recoil levels, are frequently the reason many better cartridges are less popular than they really should be,
if the rifles they, own are used.
most people would be very well armed for most hunts with common cartridges ,and in most cases when a common cartridge like a 270 win or 30/06 , 35 Whelan, or the 338 WIN MAG or 375 H&H. is used and IF, it fails to provide the expected results, its almost always a case of the wrong projectile being selected and used , less than ideal shot placement, or that shooter not understanding the cartridges effective range limitations or the games anatomy.

precise shot placement , a good knowledge of the games anatomy, and a firm grasp on the rifle and cartridges limitations,
in range and accuracy, and the projectile being matched to the game its intended for,
goes a long way towards, making the rifle you carry effective , I think that realization of the typical terrain and the fact that the area most of the guys I hunt elk with and our combined experiences , where almost every elk and mule deer our group has killed have been at ranges under 250 yards is a major factor in why the BROWNING BLR in either 30/06 or 358 win have both become the two most favored lever actions in our group, and why the most sought after rifle is the Remington 7600 in 35 Whelan.
I'm not typical as I hunt almost exclusively with my Weatherby fiber/mark, 340 mag or a SAKO carbine chambered in 375 H&H,
but the three rifles I listed above are almost standard issue for over a dozen of the guys I hunt with regularly and those BROWNING BLR carbines have an excellent reputation and yes I take a good deal of kidding about hauling a CANNON around because of my insistence on using those two cartridges most of the time, and yes I own BLR rifles chambered in 358 win. 30/06 and a BLR chambered in 450 marlin
those all work very consistently. the vast majority of hunting skill is in the hunters ability to locate game ,and to get well within the effective range of his weapon of choice , and in his or her ability to consistently make accurate shots from field positions

interesting video if you have a grasp on ballistics, and game anatomy,
personally My favorite cartridges to use, depend mostly on the terrain I will hunt ,and the ranges I'm limited too,
but Id point out that a consistently good shot that understands his weapon of choice and its ballistic limitations
now I will point out a few cartridges and ILL LIST the projectile I used and the typical ranges Ive used it at successfully

now obviously this is a bit tongue in cheek,
because different areas may require different equipment,
and if you watch most videos or out door shows,
or read most hunting magazines,
you might get the idea most elk and mule deer are usually shot at long distance in open grass lands.
While this is true in some areas,
,its certainly not true for many areas I've hunted over 5 decades, most of the guys I started hunting elk with,
advised...

Id point out most of the areas I hunt are thicker timber where ranges average UNDER 120 yards read the linked thread above

BROWNING BLR 30/06 sprng , near 2800 fps, 165 grain speer , average ranges on mule deer. under 300 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement

BROWNING BLR, lever action, 358 win, near 2300 fps 250 grain speer bullets, average ranges on mule deer. and on elk ,under 250 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement

remington 7600,35 whelan near 2500 fps, 250 grain speer bullets, average ranges on mule deer. and on elk ,under 250 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement

WEATHERBY MARK V 340 wby near 2800 fps, 250 hornady bullets, average ranges on mule deer. and on elk ,under 250 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement

WEATHERBY MARK V 375 H&H near 2650 fps, 270 hornady bullets, average ranges on mule deer. and on elk ,under 250 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement

BROWNING 450 marlin BLR near 2000 fps 375 grain hard cast ,average ranges on mule deer. and on elk ,under 170 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement obviously an upgrade over the still very effective 45/70
MARLIN 1895, 45/70 405 grain hard cast at about 1600 fps average ranges on mule deer. and on elk ,under 170 yards, 100% effective with good shot placement
