I am looking for a good trans to put behind my new motor.

I want a trans that can with stand at least 400 HP still full auto with a little frimmer shift but not neck breaking shifts a everyday driver type.

As normal cheeper is better when you are on a budget but I don't want JUNK.

I want to reuse the OEM Converter I don't think I need a high stall type.

I read some were the 1986 have a 1200 RPM stall stock thats all I need.

I looked at Mad Dog Transmission but after reading there Reviews It sound best to stay away from them.

What trarns would you get.
How about those E-Bay trans are they worth gettng.

After looking at differnt trans and Prices and U-Tube and buying a Book on trans I going to rebuild my own .

Parts from Monster Tranmission for a Monster Mega trans KIT with the good stuff rated at 500 HP was $499.00 and average price for a pre built trans is $1600.00 shipping and tax the nomal stuff.

I just could not pay $1100.00 in labor.

I willing to spend 1 day to rebuild my own I wish I made a grand a day at work.

I have the old one torn down about 2 hours took my time It cleaned up in Zip lock bags just waiting for the new kit to show up so I can put it back together.

I still need to buy a Tourqe Convetor but is anouther $200.00 but I still come out a head doing it my self.

I going with a 1800 to 2000 RPM stall Conveter it a street car.

please post clear pictures of the rebuild process ,because about 90% of the guys I know would NEVER even think of rebuilding a transmission, as its always seemed to be far to complicated.
on the other side of the question those few that do know how to do it correctly have a huge advantage.
you'll, never learn anything new unless you constantly try new things, the smart route will be to get a couple video, or manuals as a reference resource, and if possible , an experienced friend to help.
you will need a few specialized tools, like snap ring pliers and gear pullers etc. for any trans rebuild and in some cases a hydraulic press, depending on what your required to take apart, but the reference sources should let you know whats required before you start.
you will need a large table at the least, as a work station, but you wont be the first guy to use a sheet of 3/4" plywood supported on 4 saw horses or jack stands with a cheap, large clear 6 mil thick plastic tarp over it, as a transmission rebuild site, as the plastic and outer rim retains any fluids making clean-up easier
(btw screw 4 sections of 2"x 2" wood to the upper outer rim of the plywood and then staple the tarp to their inner surface, as it tends to both keep the plywood from bending and small parts from rolling off the edge of the plywood, and the tarp from sliding off the plywood)

Ive rebuilt hundreds of engines but only about a dozen transmissions and most of those were muncie 4 speeds or th400 transmissions and I would have never even tried to do either until I found a friend that had experience as a helper, but its always far more intimidating before you start than after you just get some experience, and in 90% of the cases you find your fears were totally not justified, and that with the correct tools and some guidance its not that difficult and you wonder why you hesitated

btw on a slightly different note!

theres nothing you can add to or modify on a 700r4 transmission that will make it into a transmission with near the strength of a modified 4L80E or a manual version or the 4L80E, most 700r4 transmissions in stock form tend to self destruct eventually once subjected too torque loads surpassing about 400ft lbs on a constant basis , even modified the transmissions rarely hold up long term once the torque loads exceed about 550 ft lbs in my experience, so if your subjecting a modified 383 sbc to a 100hp shot of nitrous , or you've built a killer sbc making 500 hp plus the 700r4 tends to be on borrowed time, its not the hose power its the heat and torque loads that break transmissions.
if your placing a really healthy sbc or a decent BBC engine in the car, cutting your loses and swapping to a 4L80E might be a very good idea
