New Cylinder Head Issues

Had been thinking of buying new Edelbrock BBC heads for either the 396, or 454 if I got one.

Reading one story someone talked about having the new complete heads getting a valve job, did not make sense so didn't pay attention.

Saw on YouTube looking for 454 engines, on the side another video saying to never run new aftermarket heads out of the box.

Watched it, and basically the machine shop guy was showing that brand new aftermarket heads from any brand, has crappy valve jobs.

It's suggested you buy the heads bare and let machine shop do valve job and install the parts.

Not sure if they are crappy valve jobs brand new, or he is trying to get people to use him so he can make $$.

Found another video and another machine shop guy shows new heads and how they leak carb cleaner out of the valves.

I thought the idea of buying new assembled heads is so you don't need to go to a machine shop.

Has anyone heard of this?

reading through the links and sub links should help you a great deal,:D
and:rolleyes: and yes its almost mandatory that you disassemble,
and inspect and clean new heads and verify clearances etc.
a couple hours spent reading through the links,
could save you a wheelbarrow full of wasted cash and weeks of wasted time

Grumpy I need to stop reading all your posts! I have never done ANYTHING right in all my years of “building” engines! I have been a complete dork! Thanks pal! Lol

don,t feel bad.. remember, when you read through these threads
,I set up and started the forum, to help new guys,
and people who are willing to learn, by asking questions, and reading,
AVOID some of the mistakes I made or MISTAKES my friends made,
the big difference between myself and most other guys, I hung out with..
was simply if I found something did not work out,
I stopped and asked WHY? and started to research WHY I screwed up and HOW you did it correctly,
or WHAT the local machine shop either screwed up , ignored, skipped doing or did badly!

I was forced, in many cases to learn the correct way to do things,
in many cases as a result of me or one of my friends screwing up royally,
we bought the wrong parts, we installed them in mis matched combos and we learned by making mistakes
and they or myself, learned by needing to do things over correctly the second time,
and usually at a considerable waste of time and cash!
and to compound the problems,
in many cases we trusted local machine shops, to do the work and paid exorbitant fees ,
to those machine shops,or waited for weeks to get the work done and then had to either pitch parts in a dumpster,
or get the work re-done wasting more expense and time invested
by local machine shops that were either totally inept or clueless morons, or scammers.
