Rule of thumb is you want a minimum of 12/15 psi oil pressure per 1000 rpm on a healthy Chev small block.
Depending on what type of oil pump you have 15 to 20 psi at idle is normal.
As you say there is a difference in pressure between roller and flat, solid and hydraulic lifter engines.
your oil pump pick-up must be 3/8"-1/2" off the oil pan floor to function correctly
some time spent with a dremel tool ,and you having some skill and knowledge,
can make a decent oil pump flow significantly better.

I think I “newbie’d” my new oil pump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
…even if it’s “replace that new pump and do better next time”.

1969 L46 SBC - unmodified / stock
Oil pan & gasket getting replaced
Figured I do the oil pump after reading the thread at:

First time changing pressure springs and I was using available tools.
Drove out old roll pin w/ punch & hammer, as carefully as possible. Had some heavy cardboard under it to minimize any marring.

yeah I'm well aware you would prefer to skip reading links, but if you want to learn it requires a bit of effort on your part
the more you know, the better the choices you make!
keep in mind oil pumps provide the volume of oil flow, PRESSURE is the resistance to that volume of oil flow,
and generally the larger the bearing clearances are the larger the volume of oil flow you'll need,
to increase the gauge pressure, you'll see.
remember shimming an oil pressure pump spring is ALWAYS a bad idea, (use the correct spring) and the oil pressure relief spring has zero effect on your oil pressure other than controlling the point where the oil pump bye-pass pressure port opens, it has no effect on oil pressure or flow below that peak pressure


use the correct tool to seat the oil pump pick-up using a wrench and hammer often distorts the tube
but you can fabricate a tool similar to this much cheaper

its really a good idea to BRAZE the oil pump pick-up to the pump body
(welds tend to be brittle on steel to cast iron welds)
use of safety wires on the oil pump bolts is also a good idea
