One Of The Endless List Of Reasons To Own A Decent Welder

my neighbor Dave stopped by to show me a
gator type cart similar to this he found at a local yard sale.
these are very common in my area as they are used around the local farms and since almost everyone owns 5-40 acres these are used in the neighborhood for local transportation
trust me just visiting the mailbox , or transporting a single bale of hay to the corral, from the barn, can be a walk you want to avoid at times

he purchased the golf cart type car/truck, used at a very good reduced price simply
because part of the bed was seriously rusted
originally the cart cost about $6K he got it for 10% of that

and that metal bed needed replacement and the old original tires were dry rotted.
obviously, those would need to be purchased,

he priced the required replacement factory parts , to do the repairs ,
we replaced the brakes and wheel bearings and priced the remaining parts,
they totaled a bit over $2200
we looked at replacing the majority of the parts that were not in good shape,
that were not tires ,
and we found a bit of metal fabrication, was required to replace much of the bed,
that cost us under $160 plus a days work could be done.
most were simple sheet steel panels and a few dozen feet of 1" x 2" box steel,
required to replace the rust damage frame components
carefully cut and fitted and some welding which was required to rebuild the carts bed,
seat frames and exhaust system repairs and we saved a great deal of money,
by simply having the welder and fabrication skills required.
in refurbishing his new project.
the factory bed listed at over $760
just this one project would come very close to paying off a smaller 220 volt MIG welder
and the job certainly could be done with an oxy-acetylene torch
